OT: Value of Winchester 30-30

A buddy of mine has a Winchester 30-30 Lever action rifle. This rifle is from the 1940's. Does anybody have an idea what it is worth. He says it is in excellent condition. I would guess about $300-400 but I am not a gun appraiser.

A 1940's vintage model '94 (presumably) is not particularly rare I don't think unless very few were made during ww 2 and it falls in that vintage. Condition matters of course. If it has unusual FACTORY INSTALLED embellishments such as extra fancy wood it will be more valuable.

I not an expert either, but I'd say a little higher than that. More in the $500-$600 range. Look at gunbroker.com and see what Pre 64 Winchesters are bringing. I have a serial number list if you want to know what year it was made.

I want to add that the 30-30 has received a ballistic up grade in the last few years with the development of the soft tip spire point bullet. The old bullet was flat tipped due to the tubular magazine of the lever guns to prevent accidental detonation in the magazine. That should make the venerable old 30-30 more desirable as a hunting round.

My friends house just burnt down 11 days ago and he showed me, I believe he said a 30's win mod 94 30-30,totally cooked. Made me sick to my stomach. Lucky no one got hurt.

I see them at gun shows for $500 to $750, hardly ever see one sell, even for $500, keep in mind this is in the ArkLaTex and Miss. Could bring more in other parts of the country. Hard to justify $500 for a 150 yd rifle and due to the tubular Mag. a limited choice of bullets when You can buy a Savage 110 in 30/06 for $350 new, Remmie 700 30/06 for $450....If You are gonna scope one You have to use offset mounts, Still they are handy rifles and have killed everything from rabbits to bear, moose, so on

I like gunbroker dot com for questions like this. It's ebay for guns and they have a boat load on there at any given time. Lets you look up whats at auction and I can get an idea of what they are selling for.

I personaly have no idea.

I do not know about collectors values. I only know what a gun is worth to me as a hunting and farm gun. I am fond of the 30-30, but would only own a Marlin when it comes to the lever guns. I have never figured out what people see in those Winchesters. The parts seem to be ill fitting and flop and clank together.

Dont want to hurt anyones feelings, but I wouldn't trade 1 Marlin for 4 or 5 Winchesters.

I have had both in my time. I like you prefer the Marlin 30-30. Just a more robust design.
The Winchesters seem to be selling high on collector value.

I think I paid $200 for my Marlin. We use them as brush guns here. When your on the drive. Most times your less than 100 yards from the deer you just spooked. The little 30-30 gets to the eye fast and cuts through the brush to bag the buck.

For most deer hunters around here the 30-30 was their 1st real deer rifle. Was mine and every one I know.

Late 94s have angle eject, dont need a side mount.I have 2 one is a pre 64.I was with a friend when he bought a new 94 in the mid 50s.He paid 60.00 for it.Ser# on the last one I bought was over 9 million.
