I am trying to find a place that sells new or used sap buckets. I need about 10 and I have not been able to find them anywhere. I am in central NY. If you have any ideas please let me know. Thanks very much.

A friend of mine that used to produce maple syrup in this area did it this way. For a tap, he just used small PVC pipe, and drove it into the tree. Then he would take a clean plastic milk jug, with the cap still on it, poked a hole in the side, about half way up the side of the jug, and just big enough for the pipe to slide in, but tight enough that it wouldn't fall off easily. The sap runs into the jug. To collect the sap, he would just take the lid off, and turn the jug upside down into a 5-gallon bucket, turn it back up, put the lid back on, job done.

Jugs were cheap, PVC was reusable each season, and he had about 150 trees tapped with this system.

There are many places selling them. Any major maple equipment company e.g. Leader, Grim, Small Brothers, Waterloo, etc.

Usually also, most any body that's produces and sells syrup is also and equipment dealer.

I've sold it, off and on, in as past as have many other syrup producers in my part of central New York. I'm in Otsego County near the Schoharie line. Frank Brodie is one of the biggest equipment sells in my area - he's in South Valley, New York. Also Buck Maple in Jefferson.

Here's a link to Leader's catalog for buckets.

there is also a place in deruyter, it is the hardware store in teh middle of town, they carry syrup supplies,, you can also use clean 5 gallon pails if you can find them,

Thank you all very much. I found a lead to a place in Blossvale that has used buckets for $5 and it's only 35 miles away.

Hey JD, you think sap could be made into lawn tractor fuel? I sure would like the exhaust smell. I don't get to eat pancakes much anymore. I have a few way-to-mature soft maples...??? :) Leonard

It'd take more fuel to boil it down to sugar than it would be worth - or -cost you a fortune in reverse-osmosis equipment. Bad enough with hard and black maple, worse with red/soft maple.

You're making me hungry though with the mention of pancakes. We often throw our food into the boiling sap to cook it. Hot dogs, eggs, etc. Even make instant coffee with hot sap. Sounds good right now, but you can get pretty sick of it after doing it for a couple of weeks.
