cracked rear cast wheel

We are almost finished restoring our JD 630. My husband went to torque the rear cast wheel and it cracked. Has anyone every had this problem. He thinks he just tightened it too much, but we do not have any torque specs. I'm afraid if we don't figure out what we did wrong, it may happen when we put the other wheel on. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

Been there, done that, don't have a good answer for you.

HOWEVER, you'll probably get more "expert" responses if you post on the John Deere-specific Forum linked below.

both of my 630 wheels have been cracked for years and they haven't slid on the axles yet. i've moved them a few times and tightened them up and they've stayed. the cracks haven't grown that i can tell.jim

I had that problem too. I also think that when I heated them to loosen the adjuster pinion this weakened the castings.

When tightening them go evenly and only snug at first then drive around a little retighten, keep driving and retightening and soon they will be seated and you won't get anymore on the wrench. Try not to go real tight with the bolts. IE don't use a cheater bar !

I'm glad I am not the only one to do this. Just last week. From what I have heard those hubs on the JD's must have been notoriously weak. Our large Ford tractor uses a similar wedge system (without the pinion) and I have never heard of anybody beaking the wheel. Wedges yes, but never a wheel. I think we will live with the crack for now, and see if it gets any bigger. Good luck with it.
