Which way does the AUX PTO on GMC 5000-6000 Trucks

I got a Hydraulic pump off of a older GMC 5000- 6000 truck which ran off the PTO on the Trany. i want to use it on a garden tractor for portable hydraulic power and need to figuer out the direction of travel. Its off a salavage truck so is not runnable to find out direction of travel.

It also had a frame mounted oil tank i did not take with me, what could i rig up for an easy cheap tank with buying a new one? i do havew a small welder

what size of a tank would i need for a single port valve to run a hydro cylinder?

Thanks for any assistance.

The pump rotation COULD vary depending on the specific make/model of the transmission and PTO used in that specific truck.

However, with about 90% certainty, the pump turns CW LOOKING AT IT'S INPUT SHAFT.

Turn the removed pump that direction by hand, and you should notice some suction at the intake port and pressure at the exhaust port. (More noticeable if there is still residual oil in the pump.)

turn the shaft like bob said and you should find out real quick. the first concern that popped into my mind is the horsepower requirements of a pump that came off a truck. does your garden tractor have enough oomph to twist it when the pressure builds up? i have a 20gpm gear pump direct coupled to a v4 wisconsin that i estimate to have 25 hp and the pump will kill the engine if the pressure gets in the 2000 range. have fun with your project.jim

They make pumps to turn either direction but each model will only work in one direction.

When a person puts one on a truck transmission you need to know what tranny you have, what side of the tranny the pump will go on and what direction you want your pto shaft to turn. The direction is critical when the pto shaft will be running a water transfer pump or an air compressor.

You may be able to look a the key way on your pump shaft and tell what direction it has been run in. It will be worn on the leading edge/side of the key way.

Hope this helps.

"They make pumps to turn either direction but each model will only work in one direction."

That statement is SOMETIMES but not ALWAYS true.

How big is the cylinder? How often will it cycle. That enters in with tank size. For PTO's PTO's on a manual transmission run the opposite direction of those on an Allison. It also makes a difference if it is a single gear PTO or a 2 gear PTO or a 2 gear with a geared adapter If it is a gear pump, hold the part of the pump that does not have the drive shaft next to your stomach with the drive shaft pointing up. If the large port or suction port is on the left it is a clockwise rotation pump. If on the otherside it is counterclockwise rotation. If both ports are the same size it will pump running either direction. Clear? If not let me know. Also remeber rule of thumb it take 1 Horsepower for each one gallon pumped at 1500 PSI.

How many horse power is the truck? How many Horsepower is you tractor? Don't think it will work. The Hydraulic pump on my 14 HP tractor is about 2 1/2" in diameter.

Is there a directional arrow on the pump flange?
Most had them at one time. Some were cast... but most are now stickers.
As others have said, the pump and PTO could turn either direction depending on the mounting location and transmission... and the PTO series. Most times the pumps are uni-directional due to their porting, but not always.

I'd also think that the average truck wetline pump will be WAY too much for a garden tractor. The pumps that I've got are 25 GPM pumps. That wants the better part of 50 HP if it's at pressure...
