Round Bale Stack Yard

Would it be best to store my 5x6 round bales on a hillside running with the hill or on flat ground?

I butt them tightly end to end in rows 2-3ft apart.

Are you covering them up? If not, DO NOT butt them together!! Your hay will rot faster if you do this. It says this right inside the Vermeer baler owner's manual. If you can't store them inside on concrete, it is better to leave them where they are ejected from the baler. If you group them together, you will have a big muddy mess. Believe me, we have tried this many ways.

We always but our end to end after they have set for a few days after baling and when you pull them apart they look just like when you put them together and have 2 year oul hay with no spoilage at all between still green . We do get 3 or 4 in. on the ground. We use a 567 J.D. with mesh wrap .Don"t stack them or let the sides touch or you will have spoilage every place they touch. If you put on a hill water will run away not under the bale. But you only need a gentle slope.

We stack out two high with the bottom bale standing up ([])and the top bale laying down on (O)it in rows 2 ft apart. As the other said, don't let the sides touch or you have spoilage at that point.

a few items from the op manual from Gehl.

Put them in a line -end to end- pressed together.
Every so often leave a space.
the next row to be spaced so sunlight can get down between.
Make sure good drainage.
North to south if possible so sunlight can get to cylindrical part as it passes east to west.
If heavy rain area put shingled part towards rain.
Shingle is the smooth feel as you run your hand around the cylindrical part.
so I would have them with ends facing downhill.
Plenty of air to stop spontaneous combustion if hay is damp [on hot days].

Need to think about fire also. Neighbor had 60 big round bales torched about a week ago.

Keep them away from the road and out of sight if possible. Then leave a spacing so if lightning or something should start them on fire they will not all go.

About 15 years ago we put up a 36x78 ft. hoop building, enough room for 166 large round bales. We put 5 across the bottom, then 4 on second layer and then 3 on the top layer. We built it on the top of a hill with shale rock for under the bales, has worked out great.
