Frost plug heater changing

I have a AC 6140 with a block heater in the engine. I need to replace the frost plug heater as it was shorting out today. i have never replaced one of these before. Do they usually just unscrew or is there a trick to it? Any help appreciated.

it depends. first of you want to start by draining the block so you don"t get anit-freeze everywhere. then if there is a small bolt in the middle, you want to loosen it up but DO NOT take it out otherwise the kepper thingy will be down in your bolck. or it may screw into the block too. just take it slow and look everything over good. read the directions to see where the heater element should point ex. 6 o"clock, 9 o"clock ect. it should specify in the directions with the new heater.

So, I best pull the one that is in there out first, so I can tell which one I have? Nothing in the AC manual on which type to use.

A lot of those have a bolt thru the center that goes thru a bar to tighten against inside of block. They have an "O" ring around them and a little bit of a flange to seat against outside of the block. Don't forget to use some "O" ring lube going back in. I think they are sold by hole size, but look which way the element points inside, to get it right.
