I was thinking about looking at a IH 404 with loader, gas, been sitting a while, any pros or cons on these tractors? Thanks Sean

Friend bought one cheap. $300.
Oil pan rusted thru, pto shaft broke off, gas tank full of water, not 1 gage working, no brakes and smokes like 50yrs of camels. Did I mention a flat rear. (Loaded with CaCl)
Fixed the pan, pto, tire & brakes. Still fighting water in gas. Prev. owner put too long of bolts in the hood, right down thru the tank! We're getting ahead of that now. Still sumpin' froggy with the 3pt.
I've used it some for landscape raking.
He uses it for brush-hogging and with a landscaping rake.
Steers very easy (no loader),starts easy, Only 4 sp trans.
NON live pto. The more we use it the less is smokes. He also used it to skid logs offa power line rite-of-way. He sez it's a gutsy lil guy! Aand he's 100% everything else green!
I say sure, paint up the Deeres and take 'em to town, leave the furmalls home ta do all the work!

I restored a 1963 404 a few years back and it is fantastic!!! I live in ND and it is cold as heck and the only time it doesn't want to start is at -20 or colder. It has an International 2000 loader on it, I use it to move snow and used it to feed horses big round bales weighing up to 1200 lbs. I do not suggest this however they are waaaay too heavy, but she's a snow moving maniac!!!! I do not have a pto or power steering on mine and surely wish for the p.s. I have no major complaints about the machine and would love to get another one someday.

My grandfather bought a 404 when they first came out.....I have loved that tractor ever since the first time I bushedhogged with it all day when I was twelve. I was so sore from the pounding it gave me, I could not get out of bed the next morning (exaggeration)...My dad and I used it for hay baling, fixing fence everything you can imagine...dad is gone and now three generations later it is mine...restoring her now...want her to look like she did the first time I saw her.....take my advice for what it is worth...they are tough....I am 59.....she has been around since 1962...never had anything done to it but tune ups...go figure..good luck with yours....ge
