purchasing an international 300

I am looking at an international 300 utility tractor. 1953 with good rear tires, metal nice and solid, and in generally real nice shape for its age. with several implements it seems like a real good price. What should I look for mechanically? What should the compression be for the cylinders? What will it cost to convert to 12 volts? Can this tractor pull a wagon through the woods with a ton of firewood on it? I am not real knowledgable about old tractors, so any input would be appreciated. I have not purchased it yet. I will wait to hear your comments.- - - Thank You

i looked on external_link, the 300's are going anywhere from 2-4 grand. pretty solid tractor, based on the farmall h. i dont see a problem pulling a ton with it. may need some weight on the rear. compression, anywhere from 80 to 120 psi range, however you want no more than 10% variance between cylinders. if the 6v system is working, why bother changing it, they have been running for 50 years or so, and not too costly to keep em charging. prolly run a couple hundred to change to 12v. here is a tractorhouse link

Glenster is on it. Steering can be an issue for some unless it has PS. If the tires are good, the PTO works well, and it doesnt smoke, it is worth toward the high end. JimN

I have a 300U, and it is a good tractor. It was only made in 55 and 56. It is 39 hp tractor. I would caution about a loader, if it doesn't have power steering.

I bought a Farmall 300 row crop for $1850. It came with an after market 3ph and a 7'back blade.
Also came with worn out hydraulics and engine. This was about 12 years ago.
