OT Still Fighting Vista

I posted yesterday about getting prints made off of pictures in Vista. I tried everything except the USB Flash Drive. When I go where you all directed me to and click, there is nothing there about file extensions or make compatible. Went to paint and can't get pictures to come up. I did go to photo gallery and clicked on file and then properties and it shows all pictures are jpeg. I'm copying them to data disc. Will this work or do I need Video DVD? Wifes cousin gave me a picture stick(?) with pictures on it and I loaded them into computer. I tried putting it back in, but it only wants to import into my computer. How do I load pictures onto it? Thanks for all the help anyway. Chris

OK, let's slow down a bit. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, because I don't use Vista.

You have confirmed that your files are in JPEG format, which is good. So they should be readable by other computers or the store's kiosk. The question is, why can't other computers read the files? Either there's a problem with your disk, or they don't recognize the file type.

The fact that Paint can't open the pictures may not mean anything. By default, Paint is installed without GIF and JPEG capability. Why, I don't know. And I don't recall how to add it in.

OK, do this: Load the CD into a computer that you say can't read the files. Open the CD in Windows Explorer. (You can do this by double-clicking on My Computer, then clicking on the CD drive.) Can you see any files on the disk? If you can't, then the disk is most likely bad and you'll need to burn a new one. (You may have to open a few folders to get down to the actual files.)

Now, if the computer can see the files, see what the extensions are of the files. That's the part of the file name that follows the "dot" or period. If you don't see an extension, then you have to turn them on. Go to Tools->Folder Options. Under the View tab, you should see an option called "Hide Extensions for known file types". Turn this option off.

If the files have extension ".JPG", pretty much any computer should be able to read them. But if they have the extension ".jpeg", it's likely that older PCs and picture kiosks won't recognize the file name, and the files will need to be renamed to work. Renaming is horrible in Windows Explorer, but can be done very easily in an MS-DOS window using the "rename" command. (e.g "rename *.jpeg *.JPG")

I have had some problems like this with my vista laptop.

If you have a program on you computer called Sonic or Nero express or Copy to DVD Then you can drag and drop files to these programs and burn CD or DVD. Data copy is OK.

When I try to copy a file to another folder or disk it only makes a Short cut and moves no files.

You will need to drag and drop files and burn .

Just my 2 cents worth LOL.

AMEN, Vista is unreliable and overweight

at work I just got upgraded to Office 2007 - 90% is useless garbage

Microsoft is now living up to all the bad things Apple people have been saying

Messed with it for 60 days. 30 gigs of junk. Happiest day of my life when I gave up on it. Went back to Xp. Only way I could see using it is if a brand new computer made especially for Vista.

If I want to "load" any sort of data, pictures, word documents, mp3 music etc etc from a CD or flash drive in Vista, I stick the disk or drive in,,,,,,click on ignore or close out of the box asking me what I want to do,,,,,,Open Windows Expoloer,,,,,,,,,select blue allllllll the files I want or edit select all etc,,,,,,,,,right click on copy,,,,,,,,,, go to whatever folder or make a folder in the C hard drive want to copy to,,,,,,,,rigth click on PASTE done.

You also need to go to Control Panel or elsewhere and select default programs and file extension defaults to select whatever program you want to be the default to open certain file extensions such as jpg etc

Not all that bad or hard AFTER you get used to how Vista (Hey I dont like it either) prefers to do things

Not necessarily. I got 2 new laptops with vista and have problems copying things. Big problem I have now is that printers just quit working. Rebooting doesn't always bring them back online. Then have to reload the printer software.

Every three years or so, Microsoft has been, in my opinion, quite a drag on our economy.

For 99.99 percent of users, the only thing differnt between one version of their software and the next is that they just change the look and where you find certain tools, buttons and functions.people WASTE dozens of hours just trying to find the button to do the same thing they did for years with the previous version.

Vista is by far the worse iteration of Microsoft man made disasters yet. Plus, it is loaded with bugs.

It took me about 8 months and hours on the phone with DELL lackies, and having to re-intall all the factory software (thereby loosing work software and settings, and having to re-do all that)before they could get my computer to wake up again after it went to sleep (previously the only way to do it was pull apart my computer desk and unplug it).

Don't be fooled by the geekishness. Bill Gates is the devil.

And now I know why I have an XP. My computer sucks for certain things but it's a heck of alot better then Vista. Think I'm going to wait before getting a new computer. Maybe something better will come out.

I agree with this or if you size the windows to show both the original folder and the destination folder. Highlite the desired files(pictures) and drag to the destination folder. You could drag them individualy also.

Then when done, back up all desired files on Vista to a nice big flash drive and install XP. Then move the files back on to an operating system that is much more user friendly and stable. The only OS MS made that was worse is WinMe

Thanks for all the replys. I copied them off, and will try them out as time permits. Might get somewhere with this yet. Chris

Chris - OT - I looked for you at Galesburg last Sunday but couldn't locate you. Even took my wife for her birthday to see some tractors! PS: We did go out to eat and shop.

Last evening, i searched my whole computer, running Win Vista, for 2 drawings i have in the paint file. Finally found one, but the other one wouldn't show. Finally gave up and decided to go watch TV. Shut it down, and at the last minute--out came the second pic! RATS!
I would gladly accept a computer running Win 98, so i could put in the discs and programs, and get my good stuff back.
Would it still be in the win98 computer hard drive? I saved it!
