Had a fun ride today to say the least.Transmission went on the 1990 f150 last summer, spent the fall and most of the winter behind the barn. While I was sick a month ago my Dad suprised me by getting it going again. We have another truck as well, but it's Dad's and we don't as a rule take it to the field so the old beater comes/came in handy for jumping in while dirty and going through places you wouldn't normally take a nicer truck through laneways to get to fields.Anyways, took it to the elevator to pick up a ton of soybean meal and the rear axel broke off on the drivers side while doing 60 mph on a fairly busy single lane highway.I was very lucky that no one was coming at the time and got hit by the wheel. The truck was newly inspected a month ago, although they couldn't predict this.Anyways, got the crap scared out of myself, luckily no one was injured.pd.

So,you put a tonnnn of mealll in a 1/2 ton pickup.no wonder the axle broke.the load capacity is about 750 lbs

Most farmers (make that all farmers) that I know would think nothing of putting 2000 or more pounds in a (full-size) half-ton pick-up.

Yea, im interested.

Hoping to get the allis going on the 4 day weekend, hope that axle dont break. Its a long way down, or atleast it feels like it.

I've never hesitated to put 2000 lbs in the back of my truck, an 88 F150 2wd. It definately squats down, but it gets to where it's going.

I was moving rocks with my brother once, and out of curiosity, we rolled across the scale at the local feed mill. Had over 2 tons in the back of that pick up. It was on the axle stops which are now long gone. Hit a bump on the road and the hitch in the receiver would drag on the road.

Put probably 30-45,000 miles on it since then, no axle problems.

We always hauled 80 bags of beans in a 1973 1/2 ton chevy. The same pickup we hauled 500 gallons of water to cows many trips still had 1/2 in of room between rubber pads on frame and springs. That was back when a pickup was a real pickup.

Ha-Sweet!!! Atleast i got SOME followers here!!

lol did you see the one i just uploaded???

Which was your favorite????

Atleast theres someone else here with a bit of a wild side.

that must have been quite a ride, did the axle literaly break or did the axle shaft and bearing retainer slide out of the housing? if it has a corporate rear end [ the inspection cover unbolts off the back like a gm] or a good old ford 9 inch [ carier unbolts from the front] both are available used in the salvage yard, you didnt say what exactly was done to the tranny but if it was already replaced and you need the truck for a worker you might just bolt a used rear end in it and go again

1. Ranger hits a tree 2.Ranger vs. snowmen 3.hillbilly dent removal on Dodge caravan..with young dude on there giving the bird.....No I did not see the latest...

Did you clean your shorts? Pickups usually do have a certain amount of overload built into them.

Last summer I loaded up my old 79 Dodge 3/4 ton with steel for the scrap dealer. There's a flatbed on it and I threw a couple of 2X12's on the sides to keep stuff from falling off. Well I loaded her up and headed for the scrap man, but she felt really squishy. When I went across the scale I found out she weighed just a twitch over 9000 lb. It does have the heavy rear axle (5200?) but!!!!! Jim

When I was a teenager we would fill the box on dad's 48 FORD F-1 and take to town to grind. The box level full would be 2000 lbs. almost ezxactly. We did have 6" sideboards on it. tokeep things in.

I was co-pilot hauling a load of baccer bales several yrs. ago . We was rolling down the hill on Hwy. 50 at Versales st. park in Indiana and the rear right broke of . The tire and wheel past us and went about a 1/4 mile down the hill . Half the bales went in all directions but only one was hit by a car behind us and none busted . The third car back was a state trooper and she just patted my buddy on the back for doing such a good job of controling the truck .Dont know if we should have got a ticket for anything or not but we did`nt .

Tough break

I'd spend a few bucks on a new axle shaft and know I still had a good truck. Rock auto has them for around a hundred bucks.

Had 2600 kg on the back og my F250 and towed a 5k kg wagon that was a little overloaded. Drove like a fish, but I got the stuff home and where I needed it.

I think they make these 1/2 tons to be more like big cars than trucks.
Best thing I ever did was swap out my 91 F150 for my 95 F250.
If your going to be doing any kind of Farm related stuff. Need that 3/4 ton.

Best Farm truck I ever seen though was Gramps old 64 Chebby 3/4 ton 4wheel drive, strait 6 with 4 speed manual trans.
Bouncy as heck but man was that one heck of a truck. Wish I had it.

I drive for a Masonary company, so I have seen way too many Masons, and landscapers over load their pickups. It is common for a mason to put 1 3500 lb pallet of mortor in their 3/4 ton ford or chevy, and then add another 1,000+ partial pallet of brick. I have seen 2 pallets of mortor (7000 lbs) on a f350. It was sagging, but he was back for more the next day.

I once worked for a call-em-again salt and water company. I watched a guy load a partial pallot(2000lb) of 80lb salt bags into the back of a 90's 3/4 ton chevy. Then put a full(3200lb) pallot behind that. It squated down till the tires where against the inside of the wheel wells. We decided to go with just one pallot. Hauling the single 3200lb pallot was normal/daily.

it cut the axel completely off, about 4 inches left of it on the wheel. The housing is worn so repairing the rear end isn"t an option,it also heavily damaged the rear quarter pannel, wheel must have rolled under it as the truck dropped, shoving the back of the fender up under the truck. The rear end wasn"t making any noises before hand, but must have at the time of the incident. There was still grease in it too.pd
