Why not?
I personally think blends are a waste of money.
The way I understand synthetics are, in a pure synthetic the molecules are all made into a uniform size without any of it being some synthetic material. So a blend would be some oil with uniform molecules and some varied sized molecules poured in, so why not use regular oil or a full synthetic?

A blend is like puting one shot of fine wine into a vat of cheap crap. If you like synthetic, that is fine buy a blend is a waste of money. Read on a few and see if they tell you how much synthetic and how much oil. Tom

"so why not use regular oil or a full synthetic?"

Performance and cost...........in certain applications, mineral oils simply do not provide the performance required AND using a pure POA(Polyalphaolefine) based oil is overkill..........remember, cost is proportional.......

So in certain circumstances a synthetic blend is a good choice in terms of cost VS required performance, it may be the best bang for your buck.............

Why not! why use it? Engines have been around this many years, have used conventional oil and lived out there service life. For example I have 2 small block chevys, one 172,000 miles the other 174,000 miles, never been rebuilt never seen synthetic oil. 4600 ford tractor 6100hours never been rebuilt no synthic oil. Yes synthetic oil well go many more miles in between oil changes or so they say, but conventional oil has done its job all these years.

Cheaper if you use one quart of synthetic, than, fill it up the rest of the way with regular oil. That is a better blend and cheaper.

Synthetic oil is great in cars but tractors run in too much dirt to use the stuff. Tractor oil needs to be changed more often just to get the dirt out of them. The best filters in the world won't get it all.

My neighbor ran a major brand of synthetic in his 1086, using the extended oil change periods the oil company recommended. I think he changed the filter a couple of times before he changed oil. I will add he is very particular about his equipment and never gives it a hint of abuse. At 7000 hours his crankshaft had to be ground and the cam and oil pump were worn out.

I've always used major brands of regular mineral oil, mainly IH, and changed every 100 hours in my 1086. When I overhauled it at 10000 hours the crank was at factory specs and the cam was about 50% on the way to replacement. I replaced the oil pump 'just because'. Both of us bought these tractors new on the same year.

I know this is just one comparison so it's not really fair, but I still like to use it. Jim

I put synthetic oil in my tractors so I can get them started in cold weather. My thoughts on extending service intervals are don't do it if you plan on keeping the vehicle/equipment. The reason for changing oil is not because it's worn out, but because it's dirty. Unless you have a filter that can trap anything that gets in the oil, extending the drain interval is not going to do your engine good.

I would use "synthetic" oil in a tractor that sits a lot. Using synthetic will allow you to only change the oil once a year (or so) without water condensing in the pan changing the oil into gunk. If you used conventional oil you should be changing it at least twice a year to avoid sludge build up.

First not all oils are created equally, both conventional & synthetic. For example reg. Castrol GTX tested better than Mobil1 in volatility & 4-ball wear tests. AMSOIL products almost always test better than all other brands. They were the first to have an API approved synthetic oil (NOT mobil1) in 1973. A key advantage of synthetics is their ability to handle contaminates like acids. This is how they are able to go longer between changes. Also, the better synthetics made from pure stocks have fewer impurities to cause sludge and thicken in cold temperatures therefore easier cold weather cranking. Synthetics are great for cold weather chore tractors and equipment.

Store bought "blends" are a joke. You pay for the synthetic and get very very little of it in the blends. If you dont want to use full synthetic, then use a quart or 2 and use regular oil for the other quarts, thus making your own blend. Tom
