Home security system

A lot of breakins have happened to some friends and relatives so I bought a Wireless Home Security System for my home and shop. Do any of you have a Home Security System installed in your home or shop or considering one?

Get a 12 gauge and a concealed carry permit! No one cares about the alarm signs and the police can't get there fast enough to stop the burglars form carrying off your stuff...real world..Charles

Concealed carry and a twelve guage? How do you conceal a twelve guage shotgun? It's a lot easier to conceal a pistol, which is about the only reason you would need a permit anyhow.

I guess I have a different opinion. I don't thank any of my tools and personal belongings are worth taking a human life, regardless of how low. If my life or family is at risk there is no dought I would take deadly action.
If I took a human life for stealing from me and there was no life threat, I wonder what the law would say and how I would deal with it.
I would much rather the thief or whatever was scared away and I never had to face them.
JUST MY THOUGHTS!

My wife wants us to look into one. I have never really wanted one but now I have 2 little girls to look after.

All I know so far is that a monitored system is the only way to go. Just lights and sirens won't cut it. The added bonus of the monitored fire system is worth the monitoring cost by itself.

big dog with a load bark. Alarms might be alright in the "big" city or near one but where i live i'd be throwing money out the window.

Conceal carry permits in some states needed for carrying assembled, loaded shotgun or rifle in car- Iowa is one I am familiar with. Spot a varmit from car and you can pull shotgun or rifle from cab rack and shoot him if licensed- otherwise need to go to locked trunk or assemble and load before use- pull into driveway and catch burglar in act and what condition is your shotgun in? -loaded and ready at hand or locked up and empty to transport? We had one installed about 5 years ago after our second break in.A local electric contractor installed it.I don't care for wireless,to many potential problems with signal, false alarms, etc.
Ours was wired directly to the sheriffs office. It doesn't cost anything for monitoring.I don't know if would stop anyone from breaking in,but i figured it would give us a heads up if someone broke in in the middle of the night.Home invasions are getting pretty popular around here. They don't care if your home or not.

IMHO, out here in the boondocks where response time from the County Mounties can be a half hour or more, it's my studied opinion a security system would be wasted money. Even if someone broke in while you're not home, they'd have you cleaned out and have disappeared by the time the law arrived.

And this is by no means a put-down on the law officers. They simply can't be everywhere at once.

I remember once about 30 years ago I was tending to livestock one evening when the County Sheriff drove in and said a convicted murderer had escaped from the pen and was believed to be in our area. If confronted, he was to be considered dangerous. The Sheriff then left to alert the rest of the neighbors.

In the scheme of things, the next thing I needed to do was get a feed truck out of a remote shed that had been closed up all day. I don't know what the gun control nuts would have done, but you'd darn well better believe I had a loaded pistol in my hand then I entered the shed. They found the guy asleep under a bridge a couple of miles away the next morning.

I guess the bottom line is, I'd rather depend on myself than someone or something else.

I had some vandalism at my farm shop which is down the road about 1/2 mile. I bought a camera system. I got the hard drive (brains) and two cameras for around $600. The hard drive is about $300 and the cameras a little over $100 each. What I like is that the cameras are color, weatherproof, and have infrared so will film in total darkness. I have all kinds of settings that I am still figuring out. I have mine set on motion detection mode. Still trying to figure out how to adjust some of the settings, but think I am gonna like it. I am hoping that just the fact it's there will scare off most. If it is kids doing it, I should be able to recognize them or read a license plate hopefully. It also has a beeper that is ear splitting that you can turn on or off if desired.

Several years back a man shot in the back and killed a 14 or 16 year old kid who was stealing a radiator from his garage. I forgot the out come of the case. But I do remember it would have been cheaper for the man to have given the kid the complete car and garage after the lawyers and courts got through with him. This was in Minnesota so that might make a difference.

I don't know where you live But some states will not accept videos in color for court evidence. Pa is one of them.

I found this out through a business man that had a B/W monitor. I said it would be better in color.

In his explanation, he said

"The low light system trying to decipher color, in a low light environment, can't give an accurate, clear picture. So They won't accept it.

The last 2 home invasions here have been at night.Home owners were badly beaten. One punk used the victims washer and dryer to get the blood off his clothes.

If you dont have a dog the alarm will at least wake you up so you wont be attacked while you sleep. This happened on the last two break ins here.

An alarm will wake you up if they come in at night.Motion lights are a must, the crooks have to decide if a man with a gun will be next. Two men have been beaten in their beds here in the last 2 weeks. One is still in the hospital. The other was 87 and deaf.In both cases the victims were asleep when the scum broke in.

Exactly my point----CHEAP NOTIFICATION! I have a friend that heard the alarm go off in his Barn/Shop, at 2AM and when he went to investigate, he found the lock broken but the intruder had left. He figures his "cheap" $300 alarm more then paid for itself with this one incident and there was no violence.

Prewired my house for an alarm system when it was built 20+ yrs ago. Installed it myself for under $400 at the time. Wired every door, window including basement windows. I did not opt for the monitoring system. Figured a thief could cut the phone lines. Just a couple of LOUD sirens and since I live in a subdivision, I figure no thief will stick around to see if someone called the cops. A lot of past break-ins in our sub were at night when everyone was upstairs sleeping. When I set the alarm at nite, I have a comfortable feeling that I won't wake up in the middle of the nite with a guy standing over me.

Next house will have a video system in addition to an alarm system. Interesting comment about the b/w vs color from Jim. Didn't know that. Have to check the local laws regarding that.

A simple sign...This house protected by Remington three nights a week.....you guess which three.

I have more zones tied into my system to monitor for flooding, low temps/furnace failure, smoke, heat, CO, LP etc. Than for motion and door/window contacts.
