Tractor hauling and trailer tires

Morning guys. I had to make a run over to IL yesterday and I tore up a trailer tire on the way back. Might have just been the tire, I"m not too impressed so far with the Duro brand trailer tires. I"m leaning more towards the horrible road conditions on the interstates over there as the reason the tire went bad. Are these bad tires? I"m new to the trailer world, I"d like a few opinions on best trailer tires you"ve had. (my tires are 205 75 D15) Also I have to make a trip with this trailer to Atlanta from my place in the next few weeks. I know the interstates from my place in Elkhart to Indy are nice roads to travel on but I"m not sure about the ones past that. I"d like to know any bad interstates to avoid if possible and the good ones to take. Thanks ind advance. Mike.
 
I75 which I assume you would take to Atlanta is quite good in KY, TN, and GA and not bad in Ohio.

For Trailer tires, I've never had a problem with Carlisle.
 
As far as my own personal and professional experience goes, the worst 15" trailer tires as far as manufacturers' defects go are the Goodyear Marathons- lots of bubbled tread seperations and ugly failures that tore off fenders. I have seen sidewall blistered Duros where air would migrate into the sidewall rubber- but I have also seen Duros where these bisters would burst and the tire still functioned. Best luck in 15" trailer so far has been Carlisle and Nankang. That 205 is pretty small- trailer tires also come in 215 and 225, and some folks run 6 ply 235 LTs. In 16" sizes, I always run Load Range E truck tires
 
Got the Duros on my 16ft.flat bed only I believe they are 225-15s. I remember they are rated for 10,000# gross weight. Don't usually haul that much but never had any problems although I never left the state of Mi with the trailer. I have Carlisles on my 7500# fifth wheel camper. It was two years old when I brought it in 06. I had two blowouts on them in the hot weather driving 60mph with it. I looked up the rating on them and they were right at the limit. Called the Carlile 800 number and complained even though they were two year old tires. He sent me a new set a size bigger at no cost and I've had no problem since. So I would make sure the tires are rated for more than your going to haul.
 
No matter what tire brand you are using I assume you checked tire pressure with a gauge before you started. Can't blame the tire for low pressure. Also you have to allow that on a long trip that you can pick up a nail shortly after you start and air leaks out as you travel causing tire failure. Not to defend the tires but the best tire can fail if it doesn't have enough pressure in it.
 
I have carlisle on my 16 foot tandem pequa trailer they are good but they wear out in about 8 to 12 months. I use the trailer 5 days a week so I dont know. Does anyone think tandem trailers wear tires faster because of the scuffing when you are turning?
 
I think those are bias-ply tires. I'm not sure, but if so, get some good radials on it. Bias tires make a lot of heat when pushed to their capacity, and tend to blow a lot easier, IMO. The radials also ride a lot better. I bought a 20K gooseneck a few years ago with bias on it, pulled hard, rode terrible. Replaced with radials and made a whole different trailer out of it.
 
I have what is probably just a car tire on my trailer. They are "Brigadier" branded 205-75-15"s, but they say "extra load" on the sidewalls, and came new on the trailer 10 years ago. Actually they"re only on the left side. The right side tires are just car tires and I could tell a difference with how much they squatted right over left when I hauled a D17 home. The right side tires each got taken out by nails.
This is a good topic. I guess it"s time to check things over before hauling tractors anywhere this summer. One thing"s for sure, it"s time to repack wheel bearings.
