Was planting Taters today and thought about an incident that happened a few years ago. My wife said to me early one Sunday morning." Those potato vines look like they may have some potatoes under them, if you will get me a few, I'll put em in the beans for lunch.” Went out got down on my hands and knees and started digging around under the vines. I felt something that felt funny, looked under the vine and was staring a Rattlesnake eye to eye. Got me a hoe and killed the rascal. If it hadn't been cool I would have got bit for sure.

You know I often wondered about what farming would be like with the danger of snakes, and spiders that normally isnt in our area.

The only poisonous snake we have that is native to where we live is the Copperhead , but like to live in damp rocky places. I never saw one in the field. but I was told if you smell cucumber and know none is around, watch you step and get out of there cause your close to a den.

It's good thing you are not in Calif. It is against the law to kill a rattle snake. Our tree huggers at work. Stan

We have Copperheads to. They will bite you quicker than a Rattlesnake but they are not quite as poisonous. Yes you can smell them sometimes, kind of a musty smell. I don't like either.

I pulled a bale of clover hay out of a wire tie baler one time and it had a big black snake in it. I kicked the bale off the wagon and kept on going. Went back later to get the bale and the snake was gone. rw

we have copperheads too have killed big wons in fields they realy love hanging around berry bushes they will layup under them and ambush birds that land in them to get a berry.
