Brakes............

Has anyone else had this happen?

'89 Chevy 1500 4x4 X cab long box pickup with rear ABS.

Whenever the pickup is accelerating, and nothing touching the brakes, the brake warning light comes on as the speedo passes 37 mph. The light then stays on until the ignition is turned off. Then the light acts normal and stays off--until you exceed 37 mph. It's predictable, time after time. The brakes work normally, otherwise.

Since the front pads and rear shoes are about 70%, and I replaced the master cylinder simply to eliminate it, I have to assume it's an ABS problem. There's no separate ABS light.

In general, when the ABS turns the light on, it means there's a problem with the ABS and the ABS has disabled itself. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the brake system itself, or any impending disaster, it just means the ABS isn't working. I can live without the rear wheel ABS as long as I know that's what it is, and the light isn't noticeable enough to be a distraction. The only thing is, if a different problem were to turn the light on, you wouldn't know it.

Just wondered if anyone else had run into this.

I think Scotty is on the right track, a sensor on one of the hubs is screwing up,I had my truck recalled and they had some kind of cleaner they used to clean off the hubs and the sensor contact..I didn't have any trouble with it but I took it in and had them cleaned..scan tool will likely tell you

'Nother thought. Is this happening when cold or only after it's been running a while?

A hot wheel bearing can trigger a brake/ABS warning. Learned that the hard way one night.

I had 89 and 90 3/4 tons w/ rear abs and they didn't have individual wheel sensors. The ABS got it's feed from speedo sensor. Cant say a 1/2 ton is the same for sure, but might have something to do w/ the 37 mph trigger though. $.02

Come to think of it, I didn't see any wheel speed sensors when I checked the rear shoes, so the ABS probably is triggered by the speedo speed sensor. I'll look at it from that angle.

Thanks for the input

On my 95 dodge 1500 my son used it to hook up to a trailer an had trouble with lights so started messing with wire coupler an ended up letting it hang down like i see many others-dangling wires. All was well til year later while going down interstate had to make a panic stop. That was when i realized brakes would not apply full pressure - would not lock up an abs did not work.To make story short found out salt water had coroded in coupler an shorted wire causing abs fuse in box to be blown.Because the abs light is in a position on dash that i did not see for long time i did not see it-- my ignorance an it almost cased a serious accident. Put everything back to gether an no problem. Will add truck set sometimes as i drove over road an battery would be dead when i got home.

my "91 1500 shortbox does the same thing. i always though it was the dummy light when you left the parking brake on. i never use mine because it don"t work. i have full stopping power yet. now you make me wonder. i didn"t think that thing had ABS. guess i learn stuff when i"m NOT in school too!

(quoted from post at 15:03:38 02/04/09) Nothing shows on a scanner, but a wheel sensor was my thought, too.

If you can capture a snapshot of the ABS system, start from low speed and take it up past the point where the light comes on and then graph the results from the wheel speed sensors. You should be able to see if there is a mismatch between the rear sensor and the fronts.

Corroded tone rings on the front can cause problems at higher speeds. You can see that problem in the graph as the lines will spike down when the signal starts to fail. This is a very common problem on the medium duty trucks.

I had a "90 Chevy 1500 4X4. Had the ABS light come on. Replaced the black box next to the master cylinder. Solved the problem. Kind of pricy though. Mark

You need to get someone to check the codes on the ABS system for you. If the speedometer works, it is not a speed sensor problem, since it takes its speed signal from the same sensor that drives the speedo. You will probably discover it needs either a valve block or a controller. There are lots of used parts available for those trucks. If you don't want to go to the expense, unplug the black box mounted at the master cylinder, and you will have normal brakes, just no ABS. By the way, it's a rear wheel only system on that truck. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless

I have a friend whos pickup is about the same year and an extended cab,he pushes the emergency brake down one click and it goes off on his.It probably is the ABS ring is rusty or covered with dirt/grease.
