IH 364 Inline Engine Block Heater

I have a IH 364 Diesel tractor I bought 12-13 years ago and I have a terrible time trying to start it when the weather is very cold. It was manufactured around 1975-76 in England. It has the BD154 Engine. Located in the lower radiator hose is an inline heater I am sure, but I have never used it. It has a rectangular metal piece protruding out of the hose and inside the rectangle is two prongs sticking out. I am sure this was where the cord would have plugged in. Does anyone know whether a cord can still be purchased to fit this, or do I have some off the wall setup? If this is obsolete or something can someone tell me what the best thing is to use for my model tractor?

I'm not familiar with your 364 or the heater, but I believe it's called a lower rad hose heater. It will help a lot if you get it working. If you haven't already, try the IH dealer, and see what they say. Go to an auto/industrial parts store, with your picture and a center to center measurement of the prongs. You may find a cord to fit, or something close you can trim with a knife to fit. If you can't get 'er working, you could replace the inline heater(measure hose dia for the parts store run). You could also plumb in a circulating heater(similar idea to what you have). I have one on my 706 D, and a "winter cover"(old carpet or tarp is fine) over engine and rad. The temp guage shows 180 after a few hours, even at -20. Then as long as the starter will engage, you're in business. I use both my farmall diesels to run augers all winter in Canada, so let me know if you have more questions.

You should just get a new lower rad hose heater, Katz makes them, thats what we have around here in NY. They are about 27 bucks. You dont know if the one on your tractor still works even. I fond on our two Fords the one with the block heater will start sooner than the one with the rad hose heater. But it starts better than it did without the rad hose heater. What I mean is it takes longer to get warm.

I had those heaters on several of my British IHs and none of mine were worth using.

If you don't get your's going, it's pretty easy to install a tank-heater into any of the BD144 or BD154 engines.

Are your glow plugs working good?

That may be part of the trouble, however you do need a good working "block heater" in those engines to start good in the cold.
