WD pops through exhaust

I have rebuilt the carb and checked timing, cleaned gas tank and changed plugs and points. My WD has a distribtor. It still continues to pop through the exhaust when running, but not if it's pulling hard. It only does it when it is sitting stationary especailly at idle or going down a hill.Does anyone have experience with this problem and other possible fixes. The tractor runs fine other then that , but I'd it to purr like a kitten.

bad valves or out of adjustment.bad cap also [spark jumping] but sounds like valve problem

Popping going down a hill is just normal..
If the muffler is not a good fit, it will pop a lot more..
At idle, it could be from a worn bearing in the distributor..worn valve guides, or bad valves..
Have you checked compression, or checked valve lash..?
I definitely like the original "Nelson" muffler the Best..it has that "Sweet Sound" of a WD....!!!
Nothing else sounds like one..

You sure it isn't popping out the intake? You know, like a bad cam will do?

It pops out the exhaust and sometimes I get a back fire

I think that looking at valve lash and compresssion makes sense. I'll tryit thanks
