I am finally getting to the stage for buying some new shoes for this recent restoration. Alas, the tires were typical worn out, flat and rotting off the rim. One 12.4 X 28 that was so small, it just looked wrong. The other was a 12.75 original with the old Firestone (cross-hatch?) design. This tractor does have the right fenders and I was wondering if anyone else has the maximum width tire that would fit.

I am looking to put 14.9 x 28 Good Years on it. Should it be able to handle those without rubbing on the fenders? Would a better bet be 13.6 X28? Just looking for those that have had experiance in this situation with their own "D"s. Thanks in advance!

Larry, It will depend on what rims you have. Cast center with clamp on rims? Cutoffs with rims welded on? I've seen some wider tires not work well and rub on fenders because the rims were not spaced out far enough when welded on the cut off spokes. Everyone of them I've seen is welded on a tad different. So the tire size someone suggests here may or may not work because of that. Just need to look at how much clearance you have now with wider tire to help decide.

18.4x28 fits nice or 16.9 x 28 or 30.

16.9 x28's are pretty common but a bit on small side.the 18.4 x 30's are too big but will fit with a bit of finagling.Paul

I feel like such a rookie, I should have mentioned that they are going on a set of original 8" wide F&H round spoke rims.

Sorry for the confusion.

18.4's would look nice, and may be in the future planning for this guy especially if I want to put it in the pull's, but for now I have ot work with what I got.

The 12.75 size converted to 14 and now I think is the 16.9 size. Can't find all my information now but I do know the 12.75 converted to 14. 12.4 derived from 11 that derived from 9.00. Then there was the 9.00, 10.00, 11.25 and then the 12.75 with 13.50 following.

Problem with those narrow 8" rims is the high outside lip on rim. They were made to fit older style balloon type tires back in the day not todays tractor tires. I"ve had those on Ds and it"s hard to find a tire that the bead will fit right. There was a BF Goodrich tire yet with a bead that would almost fit right but don"t expect any of the others to fit or look right with those high lip narrow wheels. A 16.9 has to be on at least a 12" or 14" wide rim to look right. No way is a 18.4 going to work on a narrow wheel. The 13.6 may be all you can get on there but the 14.9 might work depending on how the spacing of rim is from fenders. Some of those F&H are also reversible to get wider spacing. Contact Millertire.com and see what they have sold to fit the narrow D wheels.
