I had one of those. Sold it in 1979 for $2500. Quite a collectable, but one of the worst tractors to farm with that there ever was, quality wise. Too much power for 2 cylinders. Couldn't keep it in one piece.

Me Too, its the wrong phone number though, you call there and its a car/autobody shop. The fellow said his phone has been ringing off the hook. If you jump on over to tractor house the same tractor is listed for $12,500. And its from Ohio on that site, Its from Illinois on YT.

Take it as you will

The old saying if its to good to be true it probably is.....At that price one his tractor chronies would've snapped it up..

There was a 320 listed on there also for the same price.I emailed and was told the owner was in the service and wanted me to send the money overseas.

Geez,if ANYBODY had known 40 years ago that those relics would be so collectable, somebody would have had warehouses full of'em. Back in the 60s,you could send 10 cents to Yoder and Frey in Archbold Ohio and they would send you a list from the previous tractor sale. For a long time, about half of the first page would be JD 730Ds. Everybody that had one traded them in on 3010s-4010s-3020s-4020s. The dealers couldn't give them away. They hauled them to Archbold by the semi load. Unbelievable that such a joke of a tractor turned out to be one of the most collectable John Deeres. Just like the Edsel clubs I guess.

I live close to Bloomington, IL and can tell you that address does not exist. If it did it would be directly across the street from the Bloomington Police Department. Not a good place to try a scam. Their address is 109 E. Olive St.

Besides, if it was true, myself or my brother would have already bought it.

I worked at durability testing those 30 series and I don't remember tearing them up. Full load, night and day for 600 hour runs. Clamped the axels into big gearup boxes running generators, piped fuel and coolant to them, full load in each gear loaded down to rated rpm, with hp and fuel curves run before and after each run. Could you share what all went wrong? I had heard the 820-830 models tore up PTO systems running irragation pumps. PTO tests were not in my area.
The slickest thing was to "tartup" the two cylinder tractors all the while across town in several "secret" locations they were busy designing and testing the new four cylinder series. Finally got the ergonomic steering wheel angle right, wanted a fresher look, applied big yellow areas, rounded a few corners...all to make it look like they were going onward/upward with the two cylinders! It worked. One of the best run companies in the world IMHO. Leo

What did you see fail, specifically on the 730??

I grew up as a kid using one as the "spare" for light duty pulling a wheat drill, etc, and it never gave any trouble...

But it's funny you say that - I bought an R JD a few years ago and one of my old-time farmer friends just shook his head when he heard about it - saying "Why in the world would you ever want one of those old beasts?? You must have never tried to make a living with one!"

:)

Why do wish you were closer? You will have to send a money order overseas, and will never see the tractor anyways. Distance does not matter when you fall for a scam. Tom

Oh MAN,the power steering was a problem, flywheels, which in turn tore the splines off the crank, the drip lines on the injectors went right into the oil,so when the injectors got bad, you'd run them for a day, pull the dipstick the next morning before startup and a mix of fuel and oil would gush out.The 24 volt electrical system with that split ground. I had a seal go out in a rear axle, just CONSTANTLY something with that thing. It was a 1960 model. I bought it in 76,didn't have a whole lot of hours on it. Sure expected better.

I didnt respond to the ad, just saw the tractor and price. If I could touch the tractor, at some ones home, and hand them cash. I would have bought THAT tractor for that price. I would never, ever deal with anything sounding fishy. Sure would be nice to get the adresses of the jokers and start filling out free trial issue subscriptions for every post card in every magazine I could find.

I sure would like to know what problems you had also. I know where there is a 1959 730D ES with over 13,000 hours on it and has never been opened up. It still pulls 76 HP on the dyno. It's got big 500lb wheel weights on the inside of each wheel, has had duals, pulled plows, disk's and anything else you want to put behind it, never a minutes worth of trouble.

Waaaay too cheap, has to be a scamm!!
The front weights and square wide front would probably bring around 3 grand depending on the location maybe more.

my uncle had 2 of them and a 720 all diesels at the same time. used them a lot he also had 7 or 8 wds wd 45s about the same time.

Nope, got a new 4040 when I got rid of that worthless thing. I just know a bad tractor when I own one and ain't afraid to say so no matter what color it is.

Must have found yourself a lemon, which is possible every company makes them. Neighbor bought a direct start 730 new and it has over 30K on it with two rebuilds on the engine and fuel system. Not all of that was fieldwork because he has an old PTO driven grain drier that it used to run every fall 24/7 for weeks on end to dry ~400 acres of corn. Hooks a 300gal gravity barrel direct to the tractor. Pulled an 8 row white planter and cultivated 8 rows with it. He’s retired now and drags the thing around to tractor pulls weighted to the hilt. He’ll tell ya it’s the best tractor he ever had, and he plowed through and killed every brand. AC, Oliver/White (both), Deere, IH, Case.
