WD won't crank

My WD has sat in the barn for several weeks this winter, and when I tried to start it, it turned over fast, as it usually does, but never fired. Then I saw a puff of smoke from the back of the starter, and then it went dead. No solenoid click, no nothing. My manuals say starting failure might be caused by starter switch, but none of them suggest the starter itself may be at fault. Any ideas? (converted to 12volt system; lights still work)

Your manuals are for 6 volt system? Not very appropriate for a 12 volt conversion. Starters are usually stand up well with the extra voltage, as long as they are not run too long at a time, without a cooling period. That may be your problem. Burned something in the motor.
