Camshaft replacement

Need some advice. I am working on a Farmall SMD and need to replace the camshaft. I have located a good used one, and was wondering if I need to have my tappets resurfaced or if I can use them as is. I know with a new cam, new lifters are a must. I am assuming this is same. Thanks for the input. John

It is not common knowledge that the tip of the cam lobes are not flat but have a slight grind to them that along with the convex grind on the lifter gives a contact pattern that spins the lifter and gives a more gradual and less straight on contact. This was all explained by info received when I had a regrind done by Lunati for my DC Case. New lifters alone will not assure that the contact pattern is correct. A used cam surely has wear that is not compatible with a resurfaced lifter and should be reground to assure proper break in and maximum life. There is a possibility that premature cam or lifter failure can occour unless both are correct and can begin their lives together. mEl

The better oil, the limited use of many older tractors, and the financial straps we might find our selves in sometimes dictate the use of next best practice. You are correct, but we all compromize. JimN
