My uncle is moving to an assited living facilitly so we are helping him move and clean out the house on his farm so he can rent it out. In the back of his hall closet we found a case of beer and 2 cases of Lipton tea that had Dec 2007 dates on them. He can't take it with him so he gave it to us. I figured the beer would still be OK but I was wondering about the tea? It's been in a dark closet at room temperature for 2 years.

I would drink it and ponder that quote by Frederick Nietzsche;
"That which does not kill us makes us stronger"

Actually tea might lose a bit of it's flavor but sure wont hurt you.

Just had a thing on TV here where they tested things that were passed cutoff date. To name a few;

Beer- 10 years
canned fruit- 20 years
instant coffee in glass jar (sealed)-20 years
canned meat- 25 years
and a few other things

The tea won't hurt you, just may not taste as fresh.

Beer can sour up, if not kept in a cool dark place. On the other hand, I've got some anchor brewing christmas ale, some up 12 years in a refrigerator,at 33-34 deg F, and have broke some of that out on occasion, not supposed to age like wine, but it was darned tasty stuff.

try some of the tea,if you cant drink it put it in your garden,good fertilizer.If your worried about beer,drink a six pack of the good stuff then switch to that,OR keep it for your bro in law,football buddies,nuisance neigbors etc.

Don't know about the beer, but the other posts are right about the tea. If it was still sealed, it probably didn't lose too much flavor. It may take an extra bag to get the strength or flavor you like, but it won't hurt you. Go ahead and use it.

Light and heat will work on beer. I brew my own and aging is important to an extent, but you have to keep the light away. We went to Busch Gardens a few years ago and they gave us samples that were fresh and we compared that to some that had been stored at 100 degrees for 2 weeks. The fresh one was better, but I certainly wouldn't throw the older beer away without seeing if it still tasted good. It's been pasteurized and sealed so it won't hurt you.

That depends on how fussy you are about your beer. Some would say that if you drink domestic American beer it really doesn't matter. On the other hand, beer reaches a peak at the end of its aging process when it is canned and shipped. After that, the peak taste lasts about the same time as milk does. The beer is still drinkable but it's not the same. If you've ever done the brewery "short tour" you know what I mean.

The nice thing about both of those commodities is that whether good or bad, they won't hurt you. If the beer tastes good, drink it; Same with the tea. If not, throw it out, and you're not out much.

Hope things go well for Uncle in assisted living- nost important part is a positive attitude. My dad and his wife were in one for a couple years before he died, and they liked it fine (stepmother is still there- 91 years old, can't remember what she had for breakfast, but can still carry on a good conversation, so long as you stick with stuff that happened 30 or more years ago).
