and you expect what? the only thing they are concerned with is how to get money for raises,better benefits and retirement.
they do not care where as long as it comes.
wait till you see your next couple of tax bills.
in my neck the garbage driver makes 52000.00 per year plus a ton of benefits at little cost to them.then they get to retire with 80 percent of their last salary plus bennies.
you wonder why there is no fix up money.

We paid road and repair taxes every year, but they decided not to even spend part of it on repairs annually.

There is a fund for the road and bridges..... the repairs were being made but when things got tight everyone had there hand out for money.So they dug into it.......there goes the money for infrastructure..

I have four friends that work for Waste managment in Prarie Du Chine Wisconson. They make real good wages, but there are absolutly no screw ups, one is all it takes. Everyone in town thinks they are the hardest working group. They leave my town at 4:30 every morning except Sunday, most days they don't get home till 6:30 -7:00.

They work their butts off, get fired if they walk across the (across traffic) street on the drivers side--yep they travel every street twice each pick up day. Some of our streets have only the garbage truck for traffic in a single day (exagerated for effect).

People hastle them because they came to early, they don't put the container where the home owner wants it, on windy days the homeowners think they should bring the containers back to the house to protect them from the wind.

People put some things in the garbage that if caught dumping, and intentionaly knowing it is forbiden, the driver looses his job, that very same day.

Cars parked in front of the dipsy dumpsters, cars blocking alleys, weight embargos on roads, and bridges, chaining up for ice.

Folks get mad at the drivers for taking the big trucks up the blacktop alleys, or for tearing up their gravel with the big trucks, often confronting the drivers in a outraged form.

Papers blow away on high wind days while dumping, construction waste in the residentual garbage bins, and on and on and on.

Well Everyone that knows the drivers in my home town seem to overall think they deserve every cent they make.

All of the money was spent in IRAQ. It amasses me that the nnalert LOVE spending money on Foreigner but HATE spending money on the citizens WHO pay the taxes. I wonder why they did so bad in the last election?

Just out of curiosity would you like to have that job? (garbage man)and his pay?

I have done it in my youth and it was only min wage full time and rightly so.
with everyone saying they work their butts of so deserve more money.
I suggest you try that on your private sector boss and see how it goes.
hell they get raises because other cities in other parts of the state pay higher so they have to be brought up to speed. tho they do not have to pay the actual higher cost of living there but get to collect the increase.
we in iowa have a population of roughly 3 million yet at just the state level they need over six BILLION dollars to waste.

Wisconsins highway fund had some allocated funds that were for planned future-next year or 2- projects and emergency reserve. Dem Governor had promised teachers union some state money to get their salary up in contracts, didn"t want to raise some other taxes so said would use surplus funds. "Highway reserve" funds declared "state surplus", the "surplus" giving to teachers union. Emergency bridge repairs and some winter damages repair needed- no money in reserve, so issue bonds that will bring total cost to double if used "highway reserve". Dem Governor Doyle has a 4.5 billion wish list for federal money that includes some needed highway repairs. Madison city council and mayor have sort of set aside the city trolley/light rail plan after couple million in studies- they need to add some rail crossing barriers to keep people from getting killed by trains operating in the cities "don"t sound the horn" zones. Here in Michigan, Municipal jobs (City, County, State) are known for being overpaid, underworked with lavish retirement bennies. Well, with the economic downturn, municipal budgets are being squeezed and the unions are being forced to take a haircut. Even then, those are plum jobs. When external_link talked about "sacrifice", I don't think those that voted for him realized that THEY would have to face reality.

For decades, people with little education and skills could get high-paid jobs with excellent benefits. I believe we are rightfully returning to a "market-based" jobs situation where the pay of a job depends upon the supply of people qualified for it. I.e. Brain surgeons should get a lot, turning a screw in an auto factory should be paid minimum wage.

I agree with Jack. Just saying you "work hard" in a government job doesn't justify regular raises when the private sector is in the dumpster.

I guess you feel its ok to have engineers in cities and states with outrageous salaries only to hire consultants at outrageous prices to do their jobs.

Well then quit whining.Iam only talking about this garbage job. I pay taxes too.If they pay these poeple 1/2 as much will they lower our taxes???or if your son or daughter was down and out with a family would you tell them to ask for 1/2 the pay no bennies so they can lower our taxes.

and try singing the same story to that young family whose parents got laid off and unemployment ran out and the state says sorry you are not qualified for any assistance.
or here in iowa where the university flooded (since an engeer said sure you could build it there.) and are now getting millions from the fed to rebuild but the guy who lost his 50000.00 dollar house who was insured gets zip ,nada,zilch.

Have you forgotten that most states have their own funding equations for road repair in addition to what the Feds give them?
Have you forgotten that more than half of our state legislatures are dominated by the nnalert? And or have Democratic govenors?
Dude, the problem is not Iraq. The problem is social spending - too many piglets on the sow.
Too many entitlements! And for that the nnalert are equally if not more to blame than the nnalert. With the exception of the Governor our own fine state of MN has been run by a Democratic cabal for decades.

No man below the neck is worth more than minimum wage. If a person chooses to not get more than a high school education, or even less, they shouldn't expect to make more than minimum wage. It's all about having marketable skills. I can rebuild an automatic transmission. I make more than a door greeter at Wal-Mart because all it takes to greet people at the door is say 1 or 2 words and smile. I know what to do when a P0740 sets in a TCM. Not everybody has the equipment or skill to make the repair.

You are telling me you think we would be in the same shape if we had no spent a nickle in Iraq? I do not know how much we have spent but it is a pile and the problem was we borrowed the money from CHINA. The Demo's may be TAX and SPEND but the Repub's are BORROW and SPEND.
