Farmall H quitting

Do any of you guys know why my farmall keeps qutting after about 25 minutes of running? I start it, let it idle then go about work and it spits and sputters blowes some black smoke and stalls. I wait a minute and it will crank and crank and finally start, but will not stay running like it used to. I put new plugs and wires in it, dry gas and made sure the fuel tank was not vapor locked! Other than checking the cap, rotor, and points I dont know what else could be wrong with it. I also noticed it has a tube going from the exhaust manifold to the carb, I was wondering if the carb was getting vapor locked? Also the oil pressure drops from run to idle after 40 minutes of running, Im sure the motor is worn, or is that normal? jay

I agree with Allan. Probably the coil.

My H did approximately the same thing and the vent was plugged in the gas cap, but it sounds like you already eliminated that.

Does it have an automotive style inline gas filter on it or just the stock sediment bowl? If it has an inline filter, take it off, splice the line back together and see if it works then.

Before you get a coil, try a new condenser. About an hour ago I cured just this same problem with my Oliver 88 by replacing the condenser. The two gas tractors I use the most are the Oliver and the 630 JD and I've been replacing condensers on both of them twice as often as the points. They start crapping out, smoking and popping in the muffler.

The coil could still be the problem, but the condenser is cheap and easy. It doesn't seem like condensers last very long any more. Jim

try taking the gas cap off and stuffing a rag in there. I know that sounds to simple but sometimes that's what it is. plugged vent in cap.

Many say it"s your coil. I have one question about that. Have you switched the electrical system from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground, and if so did you switch to a 12 volt coil and make sure it"s neg ground with the 12 volt system?

If it"s smoking black smoke that means that it"s getting too much fuel, I know my H the choke will vibrate closed while running. I have to always keep an eye on it and push the rod back in. I could put a kink in the rod to prevent this but never have yet.

Usually a condenser will act up all the time but a coil will act up sometimes after it warms up.

When your H quits take the air intake hose off at the carb and see if gas runs out, if so rebuild the carb or your seat may be loose where it screws in.
One other thing I"ve seen on the ole H"s is a vacum leak that is only present when it warms up.

No, mine has the 6 volt system still. I did get a carb rebuild kit for it, but have not had the time to put it in yet! J

To check the coil, check the resistance when cold and then check it again once it starts cutting up. I'm not sure what the maximum resistance should be on a 6 volt coil, though.
