Just saw yeserdays post about repairing threads in a head. I've used Helicoils on numerous occasions but have had better luck over the years using a different type insert from Time-Sert. They are made similar to a Helicoil but the insert is solid instead of just being an open coil. You can look at the way they make them but basically they time the internal and external thread to make a solid bodied insert but still have a wall thickness as nearly thin as a regular, old style helicoil. I've used them with great success in applications where a regular helicoil has failed. They make a variety of different kinds/sizes for just about anything be it metric, standard,or spark plug thread repairs. They are available directly from Timesert or you can also get them from places like McMaster Carr, etc.

Thanks. I just added to my favorites. I broke a manifold bolt in a head a few weeks ago. I told my son to fix it before he brings it home from the machine shop, but if he doesn't,that's a good site to know about.

Used em for years great invention you can also get them in SS. They are also great for press die repairs. Another brand name is Thread-Sert (I think)You can get them from a good industrial supplier like Motion Industries or Applied they normally come with blue Loctite applied. The ones we use have notches cut so if you have to remove them you can but have found you have use an impact screwdriver and some heat.Great invention wish I had thought of it.

Every thread repair system has advantages and disadvantages. These inserts require drilling a larger hole than is required for the coil inserts. Some stripped places do not have enough room for these inserts. And drilling and tapping for the coil inserts still permits using one of these inserts later if desired and space permits. So I try the coils first.

And that is true Bus Driver I just tried to keep my normally long winded posts shorter, thanks. I just keep forgetting the common sense factor sometimes gets lost. :->

Have a head off a C Farmall with two bad spark plug holes. Threads are rusted out. Wonder if you can use thread repairs for spark plugs. Bernie Steffen

At work we have lots of helicoils in aluminum to make more durable threads and have trouble with them backing out as you unscrew the bolt. Wonder if these are any better for aluminum?
