my hands get so dry they crack and bleed, tried many lotions and creams, nothing seems to work, anyone have a miracle cure ?

try using some loctite super glue to close up the cracks. they heal faster. Use some of the lotions already mentioned every time you wash your hands. dont"t let them get dry.

Hoss says bag balm- didn"t say where to get it, and if you"re not familiar with dairy farming...another brand is Udder Balm- find it in farm stores, here, Fleet Farm, Runnings, maybe TSC? Farm stores in dairy areas. Stuff really works!

If you can´t find Bag Balm, try some Sullivan´s Swine Shine.

"Daily moisturizer to prevent scaly skin and hair while adding a great shine."

(Just a little barnyard humor.)

We use Ingram's Camphor Cream, you can get it online. Smells sort of unique, but it works better than bag balm for us.

I have never found anything that worked well other then keeping your self in doors when it is cold out. But ya for most that is not an option. And no ATF does not work for that. If it did my hands would not feel as dry as they do

10-4 Vaseline is hard to beat,,,what I do to help the cracks heal ,,, dead skin don't heal,,, take a razor blade and shave off the dead skin around the cracks then the cracks will heal,,, I have had cracked skin so bad i would shave the dead skin off till it bled,,, healed rite up

My hands got so dry last week that the backside of my hands was leaking blood through the pores. Washing grease off four times a day plus parts cleaner didn't help. I put a lotion on and wore those nitrile gloves for a day at work and it helped a LOT. I changed the gloves every couple of hours and let my hands dry some and put more lotion on. I wouldn't suggest this if you are working outside because your hands will freeze from the sweating. Your mileage may vary but after one day of this my hands are in pretty good shape this week. One more thing - drink more water. ...Randy

When the cracks get real bad I use a Band-Aid product called Liquid Bandage. It forms a water proof seal that stands up to washing greasy hands and speeds up healing.

The rest of the time Bag Balm works good.

I have the same problem with cracks or splits bleeding. I dont know how good it is for you, but I use super glue to glue the cracks together, this way they stay closed so they can heal. Try to get glue made is USA thought, like loctite gel. HTH

Use rubber gloves like already mentioned to protect them from the elements. You should be able to pick them up at a farm store. Wear those while your working and put on your hand cream at night (without the gloves) when you go to bed. A few days of this should get your hands healed up. Keep doing this to keep your hands in good shape. If you find the rubber gloves are real cold while working outside, then put regular gloves on over them.

I've nver had it that bad but my hands do get dry and itchy.
I find that Zep Glove helps. It's basically a moisturizer and protectant cream that you apply before you work. It's supposed to help keep your hands clean.
I don't use it much anymore since I now mostly use nitrile gloves... but I did use the Zep in the past week or so becuase my hands were dried out and sore form the cold. It helped.

I asked the same question a few years ago on this board. A fellow suggested Amlactin 12 lotion. His wife uses it as she works in the medical field and is continually washing her hands. Very pricy stuff available at most pharmacys but well worth the price. I've used it thru 3 winters now once per day just before bed. Used to be from September thru May I would have at least a dozen cracks at a time usually finger tips. Now I have maybe a 1/2 dozen all winter long and they arn't too bad either. Stings like crazy when you first use it but that goes away ok.
Try it out.

Lubriderm hand lotion. Had a Dr. start me on it.

Works good and not too greasy and slimey like some. It comes in scent free also if you don't want to "smell all nice and flowery."

I use a product called Nexcare skin crack care for cracks on the ends of my fingers. It looks like a medicated fingernail polish. It seems to work good. You can get it at Walmart or Walgreen's.

I get cracked fingers for a reason I can't find, to heal them I use "Ungvita" vitamin
A ointment, by Roche. If it is available over there.
The best cure is a pair of soft leather gloves, keeps hands soft like a babies bot. No ingrained dirt either. I don't use rubber gloves because they are inclined to keep the hands damp besides out in the field they don't last long,

I'm inclined to think the cracks are caused by some deficiency in the diet.

Guess I have more trouble with my feet. Heels dry out to where chunks will peel off.

(quoted from post at 20:04:36 01/20/09) Used to be able to get Corn Huskers lotion that was pretty good, not sure if they still make it though.

I hadn't seen Corn Huskers lotion since I was in grade school. Then was in the States about 12 years ago and found some in Walmart. Fast forward, and we just got 5 bottles off ebay and had them mailed over.
Neutragina hand cream (stuff Paul Harvy talks about) is real good but leaves kind of a silicony slick feeling afterwards (but water tight).

I use a product called New Skin on cracks, available at WalMart. For dry skin use Bag Balm get it from vet supplier or TSC.

Here are a few things I do....
1. Olive oil, works quite well.

2. 10W motor oil, leave on a while, lightly wash off. Kinda on the wrench monkey side of stuff but who cares.

3. Girly hand lotion that smells like perfume, I dont normally do this unless it is the only thing around.

4. Suffer through it and look like a bad a$$.

I hope this helps.

Udder balm, Goldbond ultimate lotion, those are the 2 tings I would reccomend. My hands used to get that bad when I was living at home and out in the barn all the time- Now that I'm not out there all the time and I keep lotion on them they haven't split yet this winter.

No diet deficiency, just weather and occupation related.

If you really want to soften your hands, put it on heavy and put ruber gloves on over it before you go to bed. Works great- and vaselene works for that as well.

No miracle. Wear gloves. Don't use solvent for hand cleaning. Sand down splits and apply neo-sporin with bandage.

All of those lotions will work, but the key is, and it took several years for me to learn this, you have to apply many times throughout the day, not just at night or morning. 6-8 times per day.

Burts Bees is owned by a very rich woman who is buying up large acreage in Maine and closing it to hunting and fishing, snowmobiling, hiking.Even canceling camp land leases forcing people to move their camps.Makers of Bag Balm make a good product that works,6 bucks will buy a large can.

I use Nadinola Cocoa Butter Cream. Goes on smooth, no odor, absorbed quickly, doesn't leave hands greasy. Found in the black folks hair care section of wally world. Cheap too.

I second what leon r said, just super glue the worst cracks together. Works very good. Everyone knows that superglue works on skin better then anything else you are trying to stick together.

Preventing:

-Don't wash hands with solvents
-Wear gloves
-Every time you wash your hands with soap apply some type of hand cream after

After:
The best help I've found is cutting meat. Handling the uncooked fatty portions of meat seems to soak into skin. Don't scrub your hands hard after. I suppose you should keep them out of food and away from your mouth too after doing this.

Corn Huskers Lotion.....Can be found in Wal-Mart in the same department that they have all of the womens lotion.... Usually on the top shelf or clear at the bottom shelf... Just ask someone that works in that department and they will lead you right to it... Been using it for years and years...JB

Probably not spelling it right, but the only thing that ever worked for me when I milked cows was Neutrogena Hand Cream. The stuff that Paul Harvey used to advertise. Invented by Arctic fishermen.

Hey, Sounds just like the "under wear King" in Columbus Ohio. He owns a lot of ground in Franklin & Licking counties

If I put a heavy coat of vaseline on hands and wear cheap brown jersey gloves to bed to keep the greasiness off the bedding my hands cracks will go away in two nights.Try not to wash too many times daily.Dry good before going in cold.

Find an AVON dealer and tell them you want some Moisture Therepy hand cream. I use it all the time works great. I work maintenance in a hospital and my hands are in and out of water all day long.

Silly but works...bacon grease...or bag balm...hands and feet ...wear gloves ...cotton socks,,,give it a week ,,,seems to work,,My Grandpa was a dairy farmer for 40 years so that is where I'm coming from..Charles

A french canadaian carpenter once said that if you pee on them it heals them right up.Never tried it.

None

When we milked, we used pregnant cow urine. It worked. They use pregnant horse urine for certain womens medicine today,
