carbuerator problems

Bought a HOUGH 50 Payloader last year,Good price?? needed to move a lot of dirt. Definitely a fuel problem. I like to call these kind of things," Unsolved Opportunities ". Seems I cant solve this by my lonesome. So I am asking for the collective Wisdom of the fine gentleman that hang around this forum. The engine blows black smoke like a hard working Deisel, but its a gas engine. Methinks its a float level problem. But I dont know what the correct level is. it's a Zenith carb but no tag. Any ideas? Many Thanks CC

Don't overlook the air intake system, is there a plugged up air filter somewhere in the system? Black smoke is too rich a mixture, not enough air, the air problem could be in the air filter, the adjustment or as you said a float that is not set accurately

Most carbs are a "pressure balanced" design so the mixture is virtually unaffected by air cleaner restiction. The power will be reduced with a restricted air cleaner, however.

Check your mixture adjustment first and try leaning it out somewhat. If that doesn't work, then check the float level.

Can you remove the carb and take it to a GOOD auto parts store? I've taken carbs from various equipment into our locally owned/operated parts store where they were easily identified and I was able to buy the correct kit for the carb. The kit contains all the necessary parts to completely rebuild the carb AND a gage for setting the float level! ...D

Could be a leaky float that doesn't float anymore. For float adjustment, try trial and error unless you can find the right specs. Adjust it about a 1/16" or so at a time to see if that is the problem.

I was once called to a plant that recycled
newspapers and other waste paper. the air was
very dusty, Hough endloader was running rough.
Found the air cleaner was almost completely
packed with fuzzy paper dust particles. the
machine ran fine after cleaning the housing and
replacing the element. I recommended blowing
the element out from inside out once a week
after that.
