white 2-135 engine replacement

I wanted to know if anyone knew what it would take to put a perkins 354 engine out of a massey 2705 into a white 2-135 that had a hercules 478.

I was tempted to try for what it cost me to overhaul the 478 in mine last month, but you couldn't just put that engine in there. WAY too much to change. That combine engine doesn't even have a clutch. Somebody on the Oliver forum has put a 5.9 Cummins in one. He posted a picture of it a month or so ago. You could put that motor in a 2-85 or 2-105 if you had the old engine for all the parts you'd need to do the swap.

I seem to remember others posting that military surplus Hercules engines are avalible for a relativly cheap price. No longer avalible ??

Question. Is yours junk or are you just flinching at the cost of parts? I priced them through A&I and about puked. Almost $2700 plus shipping. I called Maibach and got everything for $1850 shipping included. Pistons, sleeves, rod and main bearings and gaskets.

Ebay has about one a week go through there all the time. Seems to be a lot of them out there. This was on there a couple of weeks ago for a very affordable price.

the herc, white and continentel multifuel from mil. trucks is supposed to be the same engine . northwest equipment in montana usually has several. l8tr mike

Hercules, White, Continental, mfd to goverment
specs for M35, M35A1, M35A2, 2 1/2 ton military
trucks, were made to goverment specs and are
interchangle, in gas, multifuel, and diesel
versions. Those trucks, first engineered by REO
were also mfd by Studebaker, White, Mack, Kaiser,
and now American General. The early REOs used
their 7 main bearing 331 cubic inch gold comet
gas engine, others licensed to build them for Uncle Sam purchased engines from REO, until the
multifuels came out and Continental got the engine
contract. Later, Hercules and White subcontracted.
They all interchange in military trucks--don't
know what bellhousing the tractors used. It would
be interesting to research.
MILITARY VEHICLES Magazine is FULL of ads selling
these engines as "Takeouts",Govt rebuilds, and
New Unused, prices ranging from $600 for takeouts
to $2000 range for new or rebuilt.

That explains it somewhere in the blur of life I remember that little factoid being mentioned over a brewsky in a pub trying to sell a tractor. Thanks for clearing that up david from mo.
