We haven't treated Hawaii very nicely---invaded, occupied it, overthrew the hereditary monarchy at the point of a gun (1898-1900) turned the locals into second-class citizens, put off until 1959? making it a State.
I believe Sanford Dole was the first Pres of the US puppet (oops!) "provisional" govt (name sound familiar??).
Interesting history if you've never heard anything but the "official" version. One of the less shining examples of US Christian "diplomacy".

a short excerpt from a large article on google

Hawaii is not legally a state!

It is easy to find the courage necessary to support a moral position if that position benefits oneself. True moral courage, however, is proven when one chooses to support that which is morally and ethically right even when such a position is to one's one detriment.

The people of the United States find themselves in such a position right now, forced to choose between a moral and ethical position that carries with it the potential for "inconvenience", or supporting the status quo and having to admit to themselves that they are not the champions of justice they imagine themselves to be. By the end of this article, you will know for yourself which one you are.

Most folks have heard that Hawaii is a state, one of the United States of America. Most people, including those who live in Hawaii, accept that statement as a fact.

But the reality is that in a world in which nations are as bound by the rule of laws as are the citizens of nations (if not more so), the truth is quite different!

The truth is that each and every step along Hawaii's path from sovereign and independent nation, to annexed territory, to state, was done in violation of laws and treaties then in effect, without regard to the wishes of the Hawaiian people. Many people, including President Grover Cleveland, opposed the annexation of Hawaii.

I suppose you could say that first part applied to all British possessions.
India,Canada,America,Australia,New Zealand,South Africa,Rhodesia, etc,etc.

If it isn't, then there's one star too many on the flag.

Of all the strange questions that have come up here, this one takes the cake.

World politics is a rough game, nice countries finish last at best or get taken over and divided
up between the not so nice countries at worst.

You must not have had a good public edumacation. Hawaii is the 50th state, dont you remember the show Hawaii 5-0.
Besides Obammy was born in Hawaii so it must be a state of the union.

Obammy was really born in Kenya........The truth will set you free.

The argument is made that since annexation by the US abrogated the rights of the native people there, Hawaii's statehood is in question. The same argument could be made for every state in this country aside from the original 13 colonies. (I excluded the original colonies only because they were never "annexed".)

California, Nevada and Utah were essentially taken by force from Mexico along with much of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Wyoming.

How about Oklahoma, which was originally the "Indian Territory", but was later opened up for homesteading by "sooners"?

G-G, did you by any chance mean "President-elect external_link"?

I'm afraid that the "Kenya" theory has been taken all the way to the highest court in the land and lost. So quit crying over spilled milk.

Actually, Tinker, the former Confederate states had to re-apply for statehood. Had they not done that, they would be mere US territories, like Guam.

mark what I was trying to say is ,it was an illegal act technically it cant be a state, united states public law 103-150

been There 3 times ,LOVED it every time , 1st Time i took My 86 yr old dad WW2 Army Vet, Who was always sent there every Time He got burned or busted up or sunk .. Couple yrs later ,.Took Dad back a second time with my Cuzin to understand more about his Wartime battles . DAD went thru HellO and lived to tell about it. BUT WOULD NOT !. You are so right that America , took what it needed for its own national health ,, We have done that for 500 yrs ,, no wonder there are so many folks that live here and challenge authority and question why their taxes are so high ,, and are willing to fight at the drop of a hat ,.. thats a national Trait .

No, you didn't say any of that. You asked, "is Hawaii a state?" Any third-grade elementary school student knows that the answer to that question is "yes".

Now that you bring up these additional points, I have to ask "which illegal act?" Hawaii became a state through an act of Congress. By definition, an act Congress (once signed by the President or otherwise passed) is the law of the land unless declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Since the Supreme Court hasn't declared the statehood of Hawaii unconstitutional, that act is legal and Hawaii is a state.

Now, that is not to belittle the history of our country's treatment of Hawaii, which was a sovereign nation when we took it over. But sometimes that's the way it goes. No doubt the eastern European countries would have preferred that they didn't get turned over to the Soviet Union after WWII. But they did, it's history, it's past.

Hawaii voted for statehood as did Alaska at the same time. Funny no one mentioned Alaska not being a state when Palin was running.
All territories can vote to become states. Then congress has to approve it.
In the last few years Puerto Rico held a vote to become a state. The people there voted against it. They decided to remain a teritory.
