So it was cold

They tell me that the temps this past week in Minneapolis were the coldest in a decade. Because of the micro climate in the city, we loose bragging rights, for low temps, to the out-state people. -19F is the lowest I saw on our home thermometer. We are three miles from downtown. Our saucer magnolia tree is not supposed to be winter hardy here; the line is 200 miles south. The city heat has allowed it to flourish, so far. Several years ago we had a lot of tree damage, even on maples. The reason was that early in the season the temps dipped sharply, before the trees hardened off by getting progressively lower temps. That should not be a problem this year. Also we have had a foot+ of snow cover during the real cold. This insulation helps perennial plants that might winter-kill without it. My turf is buffalo grass, which is not recommended here.
