Farmall M with half tracks

I saw an M with half tracks being advertised and I am wondering if anyone has experience with the setup and how well it works. I am looking for something to use in the woods to haul logs up hills and such, and also to use for jobs in the winter. Thank you in advance.

They are pretty slick if they are the ones for over the tires with the idler wheels in front. just make sure the front end is an inch or two up off the ground for steering. The brakes will be needed for steering more than usual.

"just make sure the front end is an inch or two up off the ground for steering".

That's baloney.

I bought a set of metal Arps at auction. Had to remove them from a F400 at the auction. Took out 3 grousers each side and installed the half tracks on a H.

The idler wheel and spring loaded idler arms will not transfer enough weight to lift front of tractor. Something would break or get bent if you tried, even with a H. The tractor steers fine with steering wheel turning a narrow front.

It's fun to throw up "rooster tails" in fifth gear weaving down a dirt road.

I've been told by old timers it's about like adding 4wd to your tractor. I know they were real popular in the sugarbushes down home decades ago. I'd like a set but all I find are really worn out.

Thanks all very much. I think caterpillar guy is saying have the front end of the half-track assembly an inch or two off the ground, not the front end of the tractor. I hope to go and look at the tractor tomorrow. I don't have a pic but if I go I will try to take one.

Either way is incorrect. The idler arms are spring loaded and meant to apply ground pressure over the entire track that is in contact with the ground.
Why would it be any other way? You might as well get a good set of chains otherwise.

Cat guy is trying to draw a parallel between a full track and half-track. They ain't the same by a long shot. Most full tracks have steering clutches.
