Friend called said he had no water in house.Could feel pump humming on well.turned breaker off. where most likley froze pipes come out of slab on inside wall of house.

Where would you guys go about trying to thaw the wall is tonge and groove pine. so he can get access to pipe coming out of slab.maybe hair dryer on pipe thanks for help

pick up one of them electric heat tapes for pluming pipe. its basically a strip about 6 feet long that has a heating element in it, you wrap this around the pipe and plug it in. works pretty good.

I've had good luck with a small electric heater put on or close to an area like that. A tarp etc to cover it also helps a lot but be careful not to start a fire. After getting the water running again hay bales of some other insulation goes a long way to keep the water going

I've seen trailer house pipes freeze at ground level and house level. Sometimes the skirting is open enough with a crack somewhere so the wind will blow in there and dissipate the warmth coming from the trailer. Especially at near zero temperature with the wind really blowing.

Where the pipe comes out of the ground/slab, I've boiled a few pans of water and then poured boiling water on the pipe to thaw them. Using a funnel will help direct it.

Then before it freezes again and with water running, get your heat tape on and wrap it with insulation. Be sure to seal the insulation at the slab and at the house so wind/air doesn't blow into it.

Guess I didn't think back then to go ask the hippies next door to borrow a hair dryer but then with the wind blowing it probably wouldn't have done much good.

an old pipeliner friend used to use the welder on his truck to thaw pipes, but they need to be metal pipes. hook up the ground to one end and the pos. lead beyond the frozen part. crank up the welder and wait, they'll thaw pretty quickly.

Great story from Seattle about that some years ago- 2 guys going around with welder, thawing pipes. When someone refused to pay, the one guy would yell to the other, "Hey, Ed, she don't wanna pay! Reverse the polarity!" That generally got the purse out in short order.

thanks for all the advice just went over and the pipe comes up under kitchen cabinet cant get access to it. whats the chances it could be froze up at the casing where it comes out of well, heading to house

A good friend was doing that same thing for years. He went around helping folks out. A few winters ago he was in Guttenberg Ia and doing the welder thing. One of the hired men noticed the meter box on the house next door was smoking. No more of that going to happen anymore.

Lincoln used to, and maybe still does, make a meter to use for thawing pipes. It isn't approved in Canada. You really have to know what you're doing to thaw pipes with a welder. Any plastic lines can melt and I think houses have even been burned down. You can buy heat tape to wrap aroung pipe. It's like a long extension cord that keeps pipes from freezing. It has a thermostat that turns it on when it gets below freezing and shuts it off when it's above. Dave

My wife goes around and drips the water at night or when needed. Kitchen , bath.. seems to work and no lines freezing up.
I remember my folks doing that when I was a young one.

I would like to see you melt plastic pipes with a welder.I do know how to thaw plastic pipes with out heat.E xperts claim it cant be done.

She didnt know that.Good time for an old story. The deacon had a lot of homemade butter stored in his cellar. He saw a skunk in the cellar and called an old trapper who could handle skunks without having them spray.Trapper went down cellar and came up the stairs holding the skunk.Deacon says how much do I owe you.Now this was back when a dollar was a days pay.Trapper says 50 cents,Deacon says I wont pay that much,Trapper throws the skunk down the cellar stairs and it sprays.Butter gone.I met a local trapper coming out of a general store with a box trap covered with a piece of canvas over it.I said you have a skunk in there. He said ,sure do.Trapped it in the grain room.A trapper I talked with told me that if a skunk sprays you in the face ,you see a yellow fog and then you puke.
