OT: Pilated Woodpeckers

I had one of these big woodpecker's behind my property until they filled it with houses. They like dead trees so there's insects for them to feed on. They make a very loud scream too.

My former co-worker that's retired too, has a pair of these and they raise a pair of chicks each year. He took this picture from his house or from from a tent so he doesn't disturb them. Hal

We have these Flickers here near Sacramento Ca.

They must at some time have been raised in attics because every time they come to town they can be heard and found hanging from the eve vents pecking and prying, trying to enter the attic.

The not so much achieve their goal around here.

Northern ILlinois has them only in large old timber. Set in deer blind and watch them tear up an large dead tree. Tree was down this season so I did not see them. Their call gives them away in the woods. Still in the timber, heard them last summer.

My parents had one behind their house a few years ago. As I understand it they are relatively uncommon this far north.

They are a very curious bird. We were siting on my parents front porch watching the woodpecker watch us from a tree that was about 50 yards away. It then started flying straight toward us, but would pull up at the last moment to fly over the house and circle back to land in the tree again. On it's last trip it actually flew onto the porch. It was close enough to feel the breeze off it's wings. If I hadn't been there to see it, I don't think I would have believed the story. All we can figure is that it was a relatively young bird that was very curious about people.

Thanks for sharing the picture.

Yes, impressive birds. We had a pileated visit the backyard here for maybe 5 minutes a couple days ago. We have some large old red oaks the woodpeckers in general visit.
A flicker visits the heated birdbath once in a while.
About 10 bluebirds were hanging around up here later into Winter than I recall, ever. We had snow on the ground & one Alberta Clipper had come & gone and these bluebirds were still up here. They did go away before Christmas, I hope well to the South! Mark SW Wis.

We'e got lots of the fed-head downy variety, not as thick as the chickadees but almost. My girlfriend's dad classifies them as upside-down suetsuckers.

The few pileateds I've seen up here have, all but one, been back in the woods. That one I saw beatin' wings from the bog down back, right across 150 yards of open field and yard to get to the trees on the ridge across the road. It was so out of place, it took me a sec to shake my head a little and figure out just what it was.

Handsome bird.

Here are some more pictures taken by my retired co-worker of his Pilated woodpeckers. He is using a 10 power telescoping lens on his camera to get these pictures. Hal

Yep, got some red headed woodpeckers around here. I get reminded of them in the springtime when they like to drum on the sapbuckets in the woods.

Their larger cousins, the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, was thought to be extinct for decades, but confirmed sightings by experts a couple years ago in central Arkansas. Interesting stuff if you google it.

We have two of them Pilated woodpeckers in our area. Mostly wooded area here. Tend to see them mostly in spring fall and late summer. But they are very pretty and really get a good sound of pecking on these old oak tree's. They are interesting to watch.
