what do you guys think?

there is a guy i know has a farmall 460 that he would be willing to sell for $500. engine is likely siezed because he said it backfired and ranbackwards. now it won"t turn over even if you pull it...which he did. Also the T/A is out, clutch is getting bad and the brakes are shot it has good rubber all the way around, is a gas and has an IH 2000 loader. would i be a complete idiot to buy it and fix it? and i considered putting a diesel in it. would it be a bad idea to put a diesel in it...maybe even a german diesel out of an 06 series? i know those dang 6 cylinder gasers like the fuel just wonder what all your guys" opinions on it are. what do you think i should do?
it will obviously be a project tractor
thanks much

I think a popular diesel choice for pullers is a DT466. I'd say you'd likely end up with more money in the thing than its worth, but then on the other hand if nobody puts the money into it to get it going again, then its scrap.

The old motor might not be too bad. For what a premium just a diesel motor costs, it wouldn't pay to make the switch unless its going to be ran many thousands of hours.

First thing that crosses my mind is if the TA is out, you probably could never pull start it regardless, like a automatic transmision in a car.

If the loader is decent I think you should buy the rig. Then go buy a decent 706 with a cab to put the loader on and sell the unit. With the weather this winter you will find a buyer and make a thousand bucks on the deal and all you have to do is change the loader.

somethings fishy, a gas engine in that things can't run backwards, so I suspect there is more wrong with the engine than he is letting on.

Well first off there is no way in he double hockey sticks that a gas engine can/will run back wards so he doesn't have a clue what happened to it. But you say the tires are good. Those should be say 15.5X38 or something close and those in them self could be worth the $500, then add the loader and that is another $300-700 or more so if you have the money and don't jump on it you need to have your head examined LOL. Parts alone with you keeping the loader and tire you could make 2 or 3 times your money back

Actually they can run backwards. Not sure how long but we have an Oliver 1800 that will do it on occasion. Only for a few seconds but it will do it.

No it is not really running back ward it is dieseling which ya make it turn back wards but in the true since of running it is not. It is caused by carbon build up in the engine which causes hot spots which in turn cause the gas to keep burning but that does not last long enough to hurt and engine

Its a mechanical TA, usually they only goes out on the low side unless its really FUBARed.

Essentially you need to figure out if the loader and tires are worth $400 and if you can still get $100 scrap out of the tractor.

You can put a diesel in it, but a 460 isn't worth that kind of hassel. Unless you have the engine sitting there ready to go and you have a need for the tractor its a losing deal money wise. If you have an engine ready to go you'd probably be money ahead selling it as a unit instead of putting it in a 460. If it were a 656 then it would be a totally differant situation.

Gotta go along with JoeBob on this one. My 1550 Oliver likes to "diesel" and turn backwards when I shut it off.

Engine problem? Sometimes cam gear breaks- more known on Ms and Hs, especially the ones with upgrade to live pumps. You're facing 2 months of winter, no field work, and wife will throw you out of house from cabin fever in February so go to machine shed, put some blowdown wood in stove and fix engine or build something special like others snowed in on northern state farms. If no hole in block rods are probably good, valve drop would maybe mess up 1 piston. Pull pan and head to check if rebuildable- then decide if parts/pieces tractor or rebuild project. As others noted the basic parts and tires would break even or get a bit of profit. RN

Ok, FUBAR. I've seen that term it and heard the jokes. I can get the first two letters. BAR = Beyond All Repair?

ok so i've looked into an overhaul kit if that is what i'm facing, i can get an overhaul kit for $740 out of All states ag parts. prolly could get it cheaper some places but that is what i was looking at. as for the t/a, i think i could go without it for a while, i know they are $1500 or better for a new one.
P.S i'm looking at this for a collage project as i'm only 17. was planning on selling the loader as we have a 706 diesel with an IH 2250 loader on it.
thanks for the help everyone i appreciate the advise!!
