NEWAYGO, Mich. - A Newaygo County man died yesterday when he and his father tried to clean a muzzleloader gun.

Jason Charles Mielke, 28, died from a shot from the weapon that they found near a dumpster.

According to the Newaygo County Sheriff"s Office, Mielke and his father were trying to clean the weapon, but a breech plug was stuck. They put the gun in a vice and used a torch to heat the barrel in an attempt to remove the plug. The heat from the torch caused the gun to fire, striking Mielke. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A torch, to get the plug out....... no idea what is in the chamber... well it might just work out that way, wonder if it had a primer in it and they tried to fire it first. Hard lesson to learn there, if you let one of these inexpensive models get gunked up, might just be dumpster material, but what kind of a jerk leaves something like that where someone else can get their hands on it?

I have posed this before, but a kid that worked for me was working in Wal-Mart, Prarie Du Chine Wisconson. A person brought in a bolt action 30-06 that jambed often. He put a hot one in, and shoved the bolt forward. The lady that was at the door had put a trigger lock on with the trigger in the pulled position.

He said even in a big store, it was loud. Put a big ding in the web beam, and then out through the roof. You can still see the ding to this day.

He told us to use the words of (escorting) him to the front door.... was a understament, and didn't take very long at all.

Speaking of Darwin awards, someone sent me an email forward listing the top ten Darwins for the year.

If it's true, the top award goes to a robber who tried to shoot his victim but the gun didn't go off so he looked in the barrel and pulled the trigger. He's not around anymore. Jim

This incident reminds me of the difference between genius and stupidity. Genius has limits. Stupidity knows no bounds ...

What a shame. About the best thing that can be said about this tragic situation is that no innocent bystanders were hurt. God bless the victim and his family. - CB

Stupid people kills themselves with anything and everything around them.
Why is the media pounces on the rare times that people die from airplanes and firearms?

Any of you who believes he "found" this gun, look me up, as I have some real estate deal just for you. I would bet half the farm that him and or his buddy stole this gun, and if so helped clean the gene pool a bit. Tom
