polka music on a cold day...

As I sit inside on this miserable cold day, I put on the only local station left that plays polka music after lunch and I think to myself...when I'm in my 80's, will this stuff still be played. I got 50+ years before I get into my eighties too! Any stations left out there that plays the old time??

I'm listening to Bluegras Junction right now,but there are 2 local AM and 2 FM stations here that still play stuff from the 40s thru the 80s. Every thing from the Lennon Sisters,to Andy Williams,Elvis to Engelbert.

I bet that radio will be different in 50 years alright. It will be replaced with all satellite radio, and you'll be able to pick the exact songs you want on demand or just listen to it like a radio station with a computer generated playlist of the kind of music you like. Perhaps something totally new that doesn't exist yet will be the technology in 50 years.

Heck,

Thought I was the only one who liked that old ethnic stuff!! Got a million of 'em in my head tho. :>)

Sorry 'bout the poor audio; recorded these in at the local waterin' hole one night and had the mic on the floor. Got mostly bass and drums. :>(

Gotta confess my favorite is the Steel Guitar, and the Steel Guitar Rag. Under the double is my favorite on the Electric, but you don"t hear it very often ant more.

I hear you about old time music. I am 22 and most of the music I like was written and recorded long before I came along. Mostly I listen to LPs, as they seem to have most of what I like. I live about twenty miles from the New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers Association Hall of Fame and Museum in Osceola NY which has free concerts all summer on Sunday afternoons and an annual festival where you can play or listen. I highly recommend a visit if anyone ever gets up this way. The website is nysotfa.homestead.com, I believe. I like to and play my banjo there in the backup group.

Used to have an all-polka station here up until a few years ago. WAUN out of Kaukauna (Don-wi neck of the woods). Might be one or two in the Milwaukee area that play Sunday morning polkas yet. Nothing better than a cold beer and a stiff polka at 10 AM Sunday morning while sitting in the screen porch on early June day. Ever hear Don Schleis due the Schnitzelbahnk??

Stay warm,
Bill

I just watched the Big Joe show, myself.

My sister plays the accordian and has her own band, plus she plays with a number of other bands. Also, our local county fair has an accordion jamboree every year. This last year, they had 14 button boxes, a tuba, and drums. Fantastic!!

My idea of heaven is to be driving a stock car with an ipod playing polka music in my helmet.

A few still do in my neck of MN. Mostly on Sunday afternoons, but some have 1-3 hours during the week.

KDUZ in Hutchinson 1260
KNUJ in New Ulm 860
KDHL in Faribault 920
KCHK in New Prague 1350

My dad always listened to KASM out of Albany. Can't remember the numbers right now; not sure if they play hoolerie anymore or not?

Hey, Alan, Liked the songs, thanks for putting them up.

My mostly Czech wife says the double eagle song starts like a song played at weddings here in central Texas, the Grand March.

We have lots of Polka bands here but I do confess I like the music but I can't decipher the ones that they sing in Czech. Glad you didn't play that guitar in Czech.

Pedal steel or lap steel? I have messed with a pedal steel for over 30 years and still can"t play it very well.

1150. Sleepyhead Cliff (Mitchell) just retired after well over 50 years of broadcasting. Old time country in STC is WVAL, 800 AM.

I'm on a SLOW dial-up rural line for internet access so it takes too long to download your songs.

Curious what you use for a recorder? I just bought a digital recorder, a Zoom H2, and am really impressed by its quality. I play in a little group that entertains in rest homes and assisted living places and used the new recorder to record our program last weekend. Sounded almost better on the recording than it did while we were performing. That little Zoom is about the size of a pocket calculator and uses either battery or AC adapter power and I thought the price is right. Recording medium is an SD card.

Hi Ron,

I'm fairly 'horse and buggy' with this recording thing. I just plug into this old laptop.

Probably why they always sound so darned "cold/edgy". :>(

Hi Jimmy,

I haven't been able to get on to Howard's site for quite awhile now.

I can read the forum, but every time I try to log in, it just takes me right back to the login screen.

Thought maybe I'd been bounced 'er something.......:>)

Yeah, now ya got me goin' on that Steel Guitar Rag. Gotta head out to the garage and see if I can still play that dude. :>)

Hi Pard,

Oh, for sure.

Your wife is right. I can't read music and don't know one note from another; I just play what's in my ol' noggin'. 'Spose I heard someone play it that way and it must have stuck in my head. :>)

Just love the sound of those old songs. Ask her if I'm halfway close on this one? Heard it one time when I was out on the road and thought it was kind of a neat tune. :>)

Alan, she said that she has heard that song played before, but not that arrangement. Sounds like a good polka song.

Sorry I took so long to get back. I had to take a trip to the ranch to give the boys a round bale and we don't have 'net access there. But I guess that's a good thing since I do more work that way.
