JD 730 oil leak

I bought a 59 JD 730 ele. start diesel with oil dripping from the exhaust manifold. I figured the problem would be obvious when I opened her up. WRONG... No broken or worn rings, no cracked head....Valve guides are worn, but I don't think enough to leak. You tell me..... I hope some of you guys have come across this problem and can help me out. Thanks,

Randy

I think Gary has it right. My 730 will do the same thing if it is not warmed up completely and I haven"t worked it hard for a while. I try to wotk it hard at least twice a year. After plowing for just a little the problem goes away.

Check the injectors and the ring end gap. My cousins 720 burned alot of oil and upon tear down we were baffled as all looked good. Then we checked the oil ring end gap. WOW ! Looked like someone put std. rings in this .125 over bore. Found alot of other problems along the way but didn't have to spend much on the block or head.

And contrary to the rumors here a properly running 720 diesel WILL NOT SLOBBER if not worked. They won't even smoke ! Mine gets no work anymore and when I run it I get no smoke and no slobber and it does make 60 hp on the dyno.

I think so too. I had one with a bad injector pump that did that. Replaced the pump and injectors. There was one on an auction near here at the same time I had mine. There was fuel running right down the outside of the muffler on that one while it sat there running. If I remember right, the high temp that day was -2. Might have had something to do with it not warming up.
