Farmall 504

I"m looking at a Farmall 504 diesel and as we were moving the tractor, a hydrolic hose busted. It was one of the hoses that goes to the rear in/out. It started leaking pretty bad. My concern is that the fluid that was coming out was egg yoke yellow. Is this the color it is suppse to be? I read somewhere that the hydrolic oil and the thansmisssion oil are the same. This will be my first ever tractor. I'm greener than green. The gentleman also had to add half a squirt of starting fluid. I didn"t see flip a switch for the glow plugs if that is even how its done. Is any of this normal? Please help

I've never seen yellow hydraulic oil, sounds like it has water in it.
Also there should not be any pressure to the hoses leading to the rear quick couplers until the hydraulic lever is put in position to do so.

Your lever may have been stuck causing the fluid to dead head then blow the line.

I would be doubling checking and changing the hydraulic oil. Get an oil sample of the oil that is in it also.

504D has glow plugs. Should NEVER EVER use starting fluid with a glow plug engine. Sure way to break something. Before I bought it I would make sure the glow plug system is working properly and see if it will start properly. If not walk away or be prepared for some engine $$$$$.

Thanks for the advice. I will check the glow plugs. I suppose you pull one and try to see if it gets hot when you connect it to the battery. The feeling I got about the Hyd fluid is that it did hsve water in it. So if it was water, if I drain and replace, and find the source, will it be ok? The man is asking $2500. Is this a fair price? Once again, thanks. I really appreciate your help.

If it has glow plugs and they work, the tractor would have fired right up without needing the extra shot. Just pull off the wire to a glow plug and put a meter on the plug and go to ground. Check for resistance Ohms, if it's burt out, it will show open. It can show a direct connection which means it is shorted. You want resistance in Ohms.
Simple to check.
