Just wondering what the record for pentration of a hi powered rifle is.
Friend might hold it. He is atool and die maker, reknown gunsmith. Rifle discharged while he was working on it on kitchen table. Round went through the refrigerator door, 1/2 gal of milk, jar of pickles, out the back, through the kitchen wall to garage, through hot water heater, then through passenger side door of his Lincoln, then through inner panel, and finally came to rest on the seat.

Probably not a record, but he's darned lucky he's still a tool and die maker, instead of a tool and dead maker.......

He gets the $%^&# record for NOT unloading his gun before working on it. So much for being renowned. Lucky he didn't kill someone.

Sounds like he doesn't know what he is doing with a gun to pull one like that. You never work on one with out being 100% sure it is not loaded but you still treat it as if it is loaded. As far as what one will go in and out of not sure. Had a friend shot a deer this year with a 280 and the bullet didn't make it out of the neck of the deer. Didn't kill the deer either. I killed it with a shoot from my 44 mag just a moment before he shoot. He shoot just to make sure the deer went down. My shoot was a heart lung shoot his the neck. Wife pulled his bullet out of the neck when she was cleaning it and qts. it

Came home one day from work the wife was gone for a few weeks, found a note on my gate.
"Call me I have bad news Gary the neighbor"

Called him and he said that his kid fired off his 30/30 in the living room.

Went to see what happened. It went though his wall though both front side windows on my Motorhome then into the wall on my bedroom. Lucky it hit a stud and stopped there.

I can't believe a 270 went clear though a water heater filled with water that's a lot of water to get though.

I know several "gunsmiths" and none of them will work on a loaded weapon! Be Careful with your friend?

Oops....I guess your buddy was absent the day gun safety was being explained.
Good thing no one was hurt (or killed)

If the story is true, there is no way a .270 made it through a water heater.
I shot a moose in the shoulder twice at 140yrds with a 270 loaded with Nosler Partitions. Neither slug made it through the shoulder meat and shoulder bone.
Next two were through the ribs and neck, downed him on the spot. Both had full penetration.

While in College a half scared, half amused classmate returned after Christmas break.
Christmas morning he handed his curious cousin his brand new double shotgun. Cousin was learning how to load it and opening/breaking the action several times...............You pretty well guessed it. Accidental discharge.
Nobody was hit but lots of ringing ears.Fridge was ruined and the raw Boxing Day dinner Turkey inside was too full of lead to be edible.

Agree with the other posts about safety first when working on guns.

Re penetration, military ammunition has been tested over and over for penetration among other things. During the 1920s the US Army was small and some guys in army ordinance had time to do a lot of testing. Refer to the book "Hatcher's Notebook." The 30-06 was the army cartridge then and there shouldn't be much difference between it and a 270 as far as penetration goes. To sum it up, ball ammunition, not armor piercing, will penetrate 1/2 inch of mild steel at close range. Armor piercing bullets will penetrate 1/2 inch of armor plate which is high carbon steel. An armor piercing bullet merely has a small tapered cylinder of hard steel in it.

Penetration depends on velocity, bullet construction, and weight of the bullet. If the 270 had a 130 grain bullet it was probably traveling about 3100 feet per second. For comparison a 22 long rifle goes about 1200 fps.
The 30-30 goes about 22 or 2300 fps. The army 30-06 was supposed to go about 2900 fps with the 150 grain bullet.

Your friend was very lucky.

PS, I hope I didn't double post this with my clumsy fingers.

It is true. Bullet managed to pass through the heater about 3 inches from one sidewall. Yeah too bad it didn't hit dead center and save the damage to the Lincoln.
The rifle was having feeding problems so he was "just cycling ammo through it" and when he closed the bolt one a round it fired.

1st thing, the uhh accidental discharge, not good, 2nd, most of these type of rounds have the potential to penetrate things like you describe, some would punch clean through a home and it's contents. I can say that .308 military ball ammo will punch right through an old chevy tire rim at 200+ yards, punches it like a machine, same with '06 ball ammo, neck that bullet down to a .270, similar shape case and powder, and use a bullet that does not expand, or break up, you would be surprised at what a caliber like this can penetrate.

He needs to really check himself on that accidental discharge, we had a new hunter/friend do something like that, just to see if his shotgun was loaded, we were in a blind, he pulled the trigger, boom, nothing to shoot at, muzzle was not where it should have been, he was just seeing if it was loaded..... then he just about took the butt of one our stocks to the side of the head, in my book there ain't no excuse for any of this when it comes to firearms, CLEAR THAT WEAPON !!!!!!!!!! & follow safe protocol at all times, you will be safe, slack up and yeah you'll be doing unwanted penetration tests with the potential of serious injury or death.

See the link below, this guy could have bought it if he was 1" further to the left. I think the target was obviously something hard, not good.

The Chief of Police of Moscow-Madison, Wisconsin placed his service revolver in the oven in his kitchen for safe-keeping due to high crime in the neighborhood. Ahh, I did mention that he was the Chief of Police, didn't I? Forgetting what he had done, he turned on the oven to pre-heat. A round cooked off, went through the side of the oven, penetrated a wall and lodged in the bannister. The only reason anyone found out about it was he arrested himself and it hit the newspapers. Ahh, Moscow-Madison, it's where we sends our chilrens for thar highr learn'n.

I work in a transmission repair facility and over the last 23 years have seen three trannys come in with bullet holes in them.

Gord,

"He is atool and die maker, reknown gunsmith. Rifle discharged while he was working on it on kitchen table"

No offence BUT how "renowned" could one be if they negligently discharged a firearm while "working" on it?

Ironically, our coffee table discussion this morning covered a local firearm instructor who shot himself while teaching a firearm safety course several years ago..............

As for the penetration, the bullet went through a water heater, which we are to understand is full of water, and then penetrates the door of a car................Bullet must have been constructed of depleted uranium?

My wife wants to see photos. She is not buying it. Me ? Well , I'm not gonna park my car in front of your friends house . You didn't mention his name but let's just call him "El Safo" ?
