O/T Squirrels

Little off topic... but I have had problems with Squirrles in my shop, having trouble getting rid of them, and last night was the straw that broke the camels back. I found 8 nuts stuffed in the water jacket of the John Deere A I am restoring. I was hoping some of you guys can give me some tricks of getting rid of these little guys. Permanetley.

They do a lot of damage, crunchy peanut butter and rat traps do the trick for most of them.

It might be that you also have chipmunks. They love storing nuts in vehicle engine compartments. If it is chipmunks use rat poison ( don't know if that is legal tho).

I would shoot them with BB gun or 22. A cat may do the trick but the day comes when you get in your pickup and realize you have walked in cat sh*t IN your shop or go pick up a tool and it is covered in cat hair. Can't deal with either.

muskrat traps (connibear)work the best, wrap a rag around the triger add peanut butter support so trap doesnt fall over.remember a trap never sleeps

Go to the feed store/hardware and buy some rat poison called Just One Bite. It comes in a big bar about 6" or 8" long and about 4" wide. It is scored into 4 long pieces. I take a hatchet and chop it into one inch squares and scatter this along the walls, under my work benches....nooks and crannies and in the attic. Your visitors will soon be gone. It is mostly made of grain in a waxy base.....so, dogs and cats generally won"t bother it. Damned roosters will.. don"t ask me how I know...hehe!

They love to pack away those little blue pellets you find for getting rid of mice and rats. Works wonders with both chipmunks and red squirrles.

.410 shotgun works well, just they got to be up in a tree or something so you don't shoot other stuff you care about in the process. .22LR works well in buildings, but might not be a good idea if you have cement floors and things that could easily cause a richocet. Best to buy some poison bars like other have suggested.

For chipmunks and small squirrels, 5 gal bucket half to 3/4 full of water. tie a wire across the rim from one side to the other with a pop can suspended in the middle. Wire goes through the top and bottom of pop can. Peanut butter on the can for a little treat. make little ramp going up the side of bucket. They go to jump to the pop can, can spins and thats that. I have another method which includes an electric grid but that's a little more hard core!

I have shot about ten of them this fall with my crossman air rifle, but i don't want to shoot anything in the shop, in case i miss. Thanks for the ideas guys I think I will try some of these ideas. I think it may be a combination of both chipmunks and squirrels.

I did something similar to this but I found rats could get out somehow. So, I put the pop can same suspended over a 30 gal plastic barrell instead of 5 gal bucket and put about 1 inch of used motor oil in the bottom. they didn't get out no more. I bet that would work nicely for these squirrels.

Try Decon. It makes them super thirsty so they are forced outside to look for water. This way they don't pass on inside your walls, ceiling, etc. and leave a foul odor.

Simple: Go buy a box of .22 cal. "rat shot" bullets, kinda like small shotgun shells but will not go through walls. Have loads of fun ! We used those around barns and cribs when I was young. They still make them, I keep them on hand for me and the grandsons. Also good for impressing your freinds by throwing up old light bulbs and shooting them with a pistol "just don't tell them what type ammo your using" very impressive.

This summer I was trying to get rid of two barn swallows that had made a nest on the garage door rail. I was using the .22 with the little shotshells. I have a metal ceiling with the expensive 8 foot long, hi intensity, cold weather florecent bulbs, 12 bucks a pop.
My first shot didn't go that well. Missed the swallow but the richochet knocked out two bulbs which came crashing down on the hood of the Dodge CTD. About two million little pieces of glass and a cloud of mercury vapor!

Have you SEEN squirrels ?
Mice like to hide away nuts like that.
Years ago mice filled my Model A Ford muffler
full of hickory nuts. When we started it the
nuts all came rattling out the tail pipe.

Mice. Find someone who has about 30 wild barn cats and bring one to your shop. End of problem. You figure out how to bag a wild cat? Open a can of tuna and get ready with welder gloves.

What "Mark" on here has said is good. I had a problem with some. Put that rat stuff out and within a few days they were gone! Brake it up like he said and put it around. Upon a ledge just where they find it. Make sure you don't have any little kids around that might get into it.

My Mom used to shoot squirrels from a kitchen window with a shotgun. She did this when she thought there were too many in the back yard. Shot a few chipmunks too.
