Case 1030 Special vs. Wheatland

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these options, or is it the same thing? I know the special is different on the wheelbase from the General Purpose tractor, but what was the Wheatland specification for? Thanks

The description "wheatland" is a generic term for any solid axle tractor that cannot be adjustable to rowcrop spacings.
Case had wheatland tractors and rowcrop tractors but not any that could do both until the gear drive 930 and 1030s appeared in the mid 60s.
The rowcrop tractor was refered to as a General Purpose. The new wheatland was now refered to as a "Special" because the 1030 Special had the large fat tires, large full coverage fenders, heavy wide-swinging drawbar and the set back front axle of the old wheatland style tractor, but now these new Speacial tractors ALSO had adjustable axles, both front AND rear -- and an optional Category II, 3-point Draft-o-matic hitch.
Excerpt from the Case catalog says...You've essentially two tractors in one - a topnotch producer for wheat and rice, with a fast switch for row crop work. A winning combination for "one crop" areas that are becoming more diversified!

Do you know if the shorter wheelbase of the Special made it more difficult to use a loader on the front because of weight transfer? Thanks

Can't tell you that but I can say the Case power steering on a 1030 Gen. Purpose is engineered just good enough for the tractor itself. Add a loader and you'll find yourself strong-arming the steering wheel if your power steering pump is weak at all. We always had to steer ours only while its moving when loaded with a bale.
Yet I see a lot of 930/1030 tractors with loaders. Most 930s in Canada seem to be wheatlands with the set back axle and most of them have an aftermarket cab and loader on them nowdays. Also if you do a lot of bale handling and don't have time to give your leg a rest, the clutch can give you a rubber leg after awhile.
Otherwise, don't get me wrong. A solid tractor for the job and easy to work on.
