9N Ford Tractor

Why does my 9N Ford tractor act like I"ve got a load on it(Engine pulls down) when I let out on the clutch and the gear shift is in neutral? Can someone help me out? I"m not to mechanically inclined but sure do like my old tractor. I was brought up on an old 801...but that was a long time ago.

If it were mine , I'd check all fluids . As suggested maybe water & ice . Or mybe the fluid is extyremely worn-out or thick from residue(sludge) from years of lack of service . It may be time to clean it out with some kero. or diesel . Then install new fluids . I found this problem after I bought my 640 yeras ago . I found chaf from hay in my tranny & oil thick as mud . HTH ! God bless, Ken

Can you let off the clutch completely? If so then it is not a problem with ice. I know very little about these tractors, but is the hydraulic pump after the clutch? Is it somehow pumping against a load? Somebody that knows more about 9N's should be able to tell more.

It's the oil. When the clutch is down, the engine it free wheeling. When you let up the clutch, you are turning the transmission gears in the heavy oil. Also if the PTO leaver is engaged, you are running the hydraulic pump as well, with more cold oil. Once it warms up and is driven some, you will not notice the load. It's good to check for water as well, but most likely it's just the cold oil. Enjoy the tractor that runs.

If it is cold out 25 or below and I need to plow the drive I start my N engage the PTO and go back in for a cup. About ten minutes is good. I run GL-1 in mine the thinner 134 made the pump bang.
