Transfer case swap question

I have a 1989 Ford 3/4 ton diesel that the transfer case is bad in, I have a case out of a 1996 Ford 3/4 ton diesel, will these swap? They look identical except for the speedometer mounting hole. When swaping cases do you have to watch for anything like gear ratio, or will they swap as long as bolt holes and u-joint yokes and such match. None of the numbers on the metal tags match.
On the 89 the tag reads:
L088 3 1356-34
01348 E9TA-TA

On the 96 the tag reads:
B174 3 1356-64
157450 F2TA-BB

Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean?
Thanks for any help.

well there both 1356 style transfer cases, one was built in 1989, the second was built in 1992, so they should swap back in those years, from my personal experience the stock 1356 is a piece of junk but you also dont have any options, i had a '89 f350 4x4 snowplow truck and blew up 3 of them in a year and a half the oil pump went out of all 3,resulting in completly shelling the insides out, for the 4th i had a mechanic friend build me one using one of my cases and his parts, now this guy is a actual real mechanic who can not only fix a car he can build the parts if he has to, not just a high paid parts switcher, whatever he did im sure it was with aftermarket parts and probably some tricks he knew but that truck is still plowing snow for its present owner 6 years later and with that transfer case in it, you might talk with a off road shop in your area and see if there is a performance kit for it before you install it in your truck
