So Ive got a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 318 in it. It burns oil and it finally burnt a valve. I"m looking for replacement options. I understand that a 360 will fit. What else works? What about a 5.9 cummins?

Maybe a 3.9 Cummins......5.9 would be to much weight for a half ton front end. Whats wrong with rebuilding the 318?

If it works to replace the 318 with a 360, be sure to replace the torque convertor with one from a 360.

318's were internally balanced, and 360's were externally balanced with weights welded to the torque convertor. Why the torque convertor instead of the flex plate, I don't know, but that's MOPAR.

Anything will work depending on your wallet and ability. Remember that changing to a Diesel will require a new computer where changing to the 360 might mean just bolting it in and letting the computer adjust for the air flow/oxygen differences.

A quick internet search and I didn't find mopar's equivent to the GM Goodwrench engines. I did find some engines, but they are a lot more money than GM's basic crate engines.

I think the cheapest route would be to fix what you got. Either that or go to a junkyard and hope that what your buying is good.

Those are pretty trouble free engines so I wonder if it actually has major problems ?

The bottom of the intake has a plate sealed with a gasket and if the gasket leaks oil gets sucked into the engine at a high rate.

Should also be easy to find a good used engine with all those sold and rotted out. You may just find another whole truck cheap too. Many of them have tranny bad.

I've got 210,000 miles on my '97 1500 with a 318. I would fix your engine rather than try an upgrade. It's a little tired now, but still runs strong.

The 360's weren't that much stronger, but did drink more fuel. If you need a lot more power, buy a bigger truck.

Boy, I'm thinking that's the intake manifold gasket problem. Unless you abuse the heck out of that truck, I highly doubt you burned a valve. When the gasket starts to go, they will start eating oil and running bad. Perform the TSB per the link below before you get excited. You could end up spending lots of money on a simple problem......

I have a new Whirlpool washing machine and would like to power it with the motor from a F-12 Farmall. Will it fit right in or will I have to make a bracket. Does anyone make a kit for this conversion?

I concluded that it was a burnt valve because there is no compression on cylinder number 8. I guess it could be other things.

If it burnt a valve it has a cracked head. I'll bet it has also been losing a little coolant. At tear down you will likely find both heads cracked. You can get NEW loaded heads from a ebay store for less than you can get remans and I wouldn't want reman's anyway because they like to crack even more often.

You can't put a 360 in the 98 without being in violation of Federal emmission laws.

On the plus side the 5.2 and 5.9 gas bottom ends are good with just new heads.

your best bet is to long block your 318, that way it will all fit and work right, forget the diesel, you have a half ton and not only is your front end too light, the wiring and control systems for a diesel version is light years different that for a same year gas engine, if you really want a diesel trade your truck in on a good used diesel dodge
