INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW........................
Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.
Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die; they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Could even be a loved one, memorize the signs or carry them with you on a card would be my suggestion, bob

Hi Bob,

I had read that some where before other than the tongue part. Great info.

IMO, anyone over 50yo should really consider taking 1/2 aspirin per/day. Most clots they say can be dissolved in the blood stream as long as the blood is thin enough.

I learned just this week-end that blood clots in the legs will follow thru into the lungs first. That surprised me.

Have the person close their eyes when they raise their arms. If the person sees that one arm is drooping they may try to compensate for it.

When in doubt, call 911.

Thank you for posting this. I am a stroke survivor and have no side affects. I attribute this to my Hockey Trainer's Certification, I learned stroke symptoms and when I had my stroke I knew immediately what was happening and I got to a hospital quickly.
1.blurred vision
2.pain in back of head
3.pins and needles in left extremeties
4.numb left arm
5.poor balance
6.numbness in left side of face

Get to a hospital quickly and Take two or three ASPRIN AND CHEW THEM
Asprin is the first line of treatment for stroke or heart attack, will thin blood quickly and alleviate the clot that is causing the problem

Here's some stats
250,000 Americans will have a stroke this year,50,000 will die from it In Canada 25,000 will have a stroke,5000 will die from it
That's death for 10% of stroke victims immediately
Check your blood pressure..at the Pharmacy, supermarket, doctor's office or hospital, get your chloesterol level checked, don't smoke, maintain a healthy weight
NOTE I was a non smoker, slightly over weight but not obese, worked at physical labour around the farm everyday, active in all manner, never took a drug in my life and never been ill other than colds or the flu. Strokes are silent killers so take heed. OHand children as young as two have had strokes, teenagers have as many strokes per 1000 as any age group. Strokes do not just happen to old people.
Take a CPR course or a St. John's Ambulance course, you will not likely save a stranger ...it will more likely be a family member or someone close to you! Thank you MSB for reminding everyone!
