Need a gear box to change direction

I have a Braden 5 ton winch. The PTO on the tractor spins clockwise and the winch needs to go counter clockwise. I need a simple 2 gear, 1:1 gear box to reverse direction. Any ideas where I can find one?

Can you pull all the cable out of the winch and wind it the other way or does if have to wind over the top?

Or give the whole winch a 180 degree turn???

Is there any way to just turn the gear box aroung and run it out the front that would reverse it or if you were to drive it with a belt you could twist the belt if it was long enough or you could mount a sprocket on the drawbar for a chain then run the winch off the side that makes it run the right direction.

Does your intended load always go slack before you need to pull cable out? If it doesn't then you will need to manually turn the PTO shaft backwards to loosen the cable in order to disengage the drum so you can pull out cable.
I was once going to try an old heavy duty hydraulic gear pump with a tractor style PTO shafts which I could switch from one shaft to the other for reverse.

Browning Inc. Boston Gear. Motion Industries.
Getting a box with a clutch and reverse might be the ticket!!

Turn the winch around 180 degrees and then run it off the pto thru a chain. This will change the direction.
I've had to hook up gas powered air compressors like this. The engine turned it one way and the PTO was the wrong way so I just turned the compressor around then made the PTO shaft longer and used belts on it.

I done this on compressors where the engine was bad and too expensive to replace or rebuild then told the customer of the pto option.

Thanks guys, the winch has to work this way or the cable would make a 90 degree off the roller fairlead and bad things would happen. The forward/reverse gearbox sounds good and the twisted belt is a possibility. I can always rig an electric starter to run it, but would prefer the PTO. This is off an old deuce and half military truck and I've rigged it for a 3pt attachment.

Make your own setup....remembering that with two gears (in a geartrain)the output shaft will run in one direction....and with three gears, it will run in the opposite direction. ohfred
