i havehad 3 kats lower radiator hose heaters go bad in 2 months.i make sure the system is purged with fluid and the electrode pointing the right way.but they still dont last.am i doing something wrong or is ths tipical of this heater?

I had radiator hose heaters in two of my chevy sixes and both were in there at least ten years when I sold the trucks. Never did replace one. Luck maybe?

Forgot to say . In the winter I plugged tyhem when I came from work and unplugged them when I went to work. This was just in the cold est winter temperatures.

The area of the hose where a lower hose heater is installed needs to be at least 45 degrees up with a vertical installation perfered. Mine have been reliable for years. Make sure the cord is fully seated on the heater. Less than fully seated will allow road dirt/water into the thermostat and will burn up the connections because of poor contact.

When the heater is in the lower radiator hose wouldn't the convection flow be stopped by the thermostat in the engine? If so an overheat condition of the heater could occour unless the heater has an internal thermo protection t stat. A convection system depends upon the free movement of antifreeze solution because the heated water rises allowing cooler water to take its place at the heater, In a lower hose heater it must get its supply from the radiator, whose return flow is blocked by the thermostat in the top hose, Seems like a pretty inefficient poorly designed setup to me , I'll stick to the tried and true tank type that actually heat the block. mEl

The lower hose heaters do circulate without drawing cold coolant from the radiator. Heated coolant will flow up the center or high side of a hose while cooler coolant flows down the sides or low side of the hose to replace the rising stream of heated coolant. You can actually feel this on a hose running at aprox 45 degrees, the top side of the hose is much hotter to the touch than the low side.

Try one from Phillpis & Timro at 1-800-328-6108. If can use a new one that needs 1-1/2 ID hose I will sell this one for $25.00 plus shipping. Hal

Something doesn't sound right, 2 in AMC Eagles (81 & 87) been there since new, replaced hoses around them several times and still work. What voltage to them ? Are they installed per instructions ? How long do you leave them on ?

I had one in a Ford 3000 that didn't work very well. When I looked at the water flow patern the water came up from the bottom of the rad, through the heater then into the water pump. Problem was the pump was mounted high on the engine and heat from the heater would not go downhill into the block but the hose and pump got toasty. Perhaps you have a simular problem and your heater is overheating? Just a thought.

Our 574 has had them in for years now. There is no plcae to hook a tank heater up on it. they go out once in a while like maybe every 5-6 years or more years than that between times.

Thank you John, that kinda makes sense, never played with one. Something new to consider, mEl

Thanks for the comments,I beleve you are right on the fords.fords are what im putting them on and they are not lasting.I think i will figure a way to put tank heaters on if bi can figure the routing.

Good idea, problem is they don't work if the engine has a stat.
Rare is the engine where a frost plug or tank heater can not be added somehow.

My Massey 1085 uses a tank heater and it works well. It is plumbed between a drain (1/2 or 3/4 pipe thread) on the bottom left side of the block and a simular fitting high on the waterpump. For the Ford I broke down and pulled the starter, put a block heater in a frost plug hole and replaced the starter. Kinda a long project but it worked well. I have been told ya don"t need to remove the starter but I think the guy has smaller hands, longer fingers, or is just more co-ordinated than me.

Another thing that might help in some instances is to park the front end lower than the back of the car, improves flow of this type heater.
