I have an old allis chalmers tractor. It sat up for about a year in the weather and now the engine is locked up. How can I break it????

Ohhh fun....

Id remove the spark plugs and fill the cylenders with PB blaster and try to crank it every few days. Or tap the starter button. Emphises on tap, not hold.

Another method is removing the engine and tearing it down and pounding out the pistons.

Or you could pull the head and take a look, but if its been sitting for a year i wouldnt think its stuck that bad, but i could be wrong

Your tractor probably has the old un-coated cast iron piston rings still in it. I have seen these seize up after only a few month outside with no rain cap. PB Blaster or some other good quality penetrating oil in the plug holes, then rocking the tractor back and forth in high gear with the plugs still out after letting it soak for a few days might break it loose. If you can get someone to tow you on the tractor slowly, with the tractor in high gear, and letting the clutch out quick, that will usually work. If it doesn't do it the first time, try it again. These tractors are light enough where the rear wheels will just skid if it doesn't break loose right away. Good Luck!

I have found that about a year can mean from 1995 to 2008 when it comes to someone selling a locked up tractor. How time flys!

If you want to know what you have when you get it running you would have to look at and measure all the internal parts.

I bought a JD "M" and when I looked at it 8 months earlier the engine was free but when I brought it home it was stuck and stuck bad. My advice is to tear it down before you bend or break something.

I've heard of guys using rifle bore cleaner and let it soak over night. It can usually be found at an army surplus store. I've seen it work. It does wonders.

Was the exhaust covered??????? If it was then there is hope if not then forget it and open it up. That said I buy about 75% of my tractors with locked up engines and I have tried just about every thing to free them up. Pull the plugs out one at a time. Blow the cylinders out then fill with tranny fluid. Be sure to put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc out. Then after a week or so take a 12 volt battery and set in it and try the starter use short fast taps on the starter button. NEVER EVER TRY TO PULL ONE to pop it loose or thing can/will brake. So far out of more then 20 locked up engines I have only had 2 or 3 that did not spin over doing what I have said to do

If you have the crank for it fill the cylinders with pb blaster or tranny fluid put the crank in and put just a little pressure on it DON'T try to jack up the tractor with the crank just a little pressure. Let it set for a few days it will probably pop loose, if not you may want to pull the head and see what you are in for. Good luck, Mike

Jesse, Easiest way is this way, can be done in one afternoon! Here goes.............
1. Remove all tinwork & gastank! Remove intake/exhaust, Head, Pan, Oilpump, & Rod caps
2, Roll tractor outside, make sure area is clear of any Flammables,
3, In the cylinder that has the most Volume, fill with Diesel add a splash of gas, set the Diesel/gas mixture on fire! Go get a cup of coffee! While the mixture is burning. When the fire is out take a hammer and wood block and drive the piston out from the bottom.
4, Repeat with the cylinder that has the most volume Now that the first piston is out. Keep repeating till all the pistons are out. NOTE: as the volume decreases the burn time is shortened so a 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th, etc etc may be needed.
This techneique will salvage your pistons and cylinders if they are not too far gone allready. At least it is an easier way to get your engine apart that just beating the h3ll out of the pistons, Have fun, Be safe, just be heads up doing this,

I had bought a farmall 300 that was stuck and I mixed #10 diesel oil (its high in detergent or ATF is too)with a little diesel fuel and pulled out the plugs and filled the cyld.I put the plugs back in and let it set 2 weeks. Removed plugs and hit the starter a couple times and over she went.I was lucky, hope this helps.

Well I have heard it all!
Never pull a tractor to loosen it up I have seen to many engines trashed this way.
never fill cyl.with fluid and leave plugs in hyd lock will happen and again you will ruin the engine.
proper way is to remove rocker arms check to see if all the valves are closed remove plugs blow out fill with what ever K1 atf or pb blaster let it set find something that fits over pto shaft so you don" damage splines I use an old adapter with 2ft pipe wrench tractor in neutral pto engaged try moving back and forth over a couple of days.
