jd 1520 gas tractor backfire

I have a leak on my exhaust manifold, it seems like its causing the motor to backfire when i go to full throttle and it lacks power any ideas?

Are you sure the engine isn't running too lean?
If that carburetor has a main jet adjusting screw it probably needs to be opened. Hal

Or a cracked dstributor cap that has drawn moisture in this nice winter weather.

Many times when an exhaust manifold gasket blows it is a sign that the manifold was/is loose and so is the intake gasket. Backfire on acceleration is a sign of running lean, possibly from sucking air thru intake gaskets. Remove the manifold, check for flatness on mating surfaces, replace the gasket and torque properly and see if that helps.
