New Idea running gear

I needed a few more hay racks, so I bought 4 running gear last week. Got a bargain by buying all 4. 3 are Kory 8 ton. One was an older, apparently a bit lighter New Idea. It's a model 683 as best I can see the tag. (about 10 coats of paint. I scraped off enough to make out the brand and model #) It's in very good condition with nice tight steering. Needs new rubber and a bed.

so. My question is, what size (tonnage) gear is this? Any idea of approximate age?

There is a model 638 New Idea running gear. It is listed as an 8-ton capacity gear. The brochure I got this info out of was dated 1976. Hope this helps.

That helps very much! It IS a 638. I cleaned off the ID plate a little better and now can see the 3 (that I thought was a 2) There's aa seriel # and a "lot #" also.

Glad to know it's an 8 ton gear. It looked a little lighter than the Kory 8 ton gears I have, so I thought it might be a 6 ton. At any rate, it now has new 15 X 8 rims and new 9.5L X 15 Titan implement tires. As soon as the sun comes out, I'm heading outside to build a new bed on it.
